Allison Prelosky, graduate assistant in the Office of First-Year Experience and Family Programs, shares some tips about staying healthy during your first semester:
1.? Take the stairs whenever possible.?Picking the stairs over the elevator may be a pain, but it?s a great way to get a mini-workout on your way to class. Whatever you start choosing now?elevator or stairs?is likely to become a habit.
2. Know what you?re eating. Learn to read food labels (seriously?here?s a crash course from the FDA).?Often times, foods that are labeled ?low fat? are labeled as such because the portion size is 1/3 of the package. Seriously, who eats 1/3 of a muffin? Your chocolate chip coffee cake or grande pumpkin spice latte?could have many more calories than you were counting on.
3. Invest in a reusable water bottle.?Your body needs water to function properly?around 9 cups per day for women and 13 cups for men. Falling below this recommended fluid intake can contribute to dehydration and fatigue.?
4. Don?t skip breakfast.?Keep granola bars, yogurt or even cereal and milk in your residence hall room for days you won?t make it to the dining hall. Staying hungry until lunch and through your classes can affect your concentration, and it can contribute to overeating when you do have your next meal.
5. Eat your fruits and veggies.?Make mom and dad proud by adding fruits and vegetables to each meal. It?s not hard, and there will be plenty of options in the dining halls. Set a rule for yourself that your parents would be proud of?no dessert until you?ve finished your veggies!
6. Pick an end time for caffeine consumption.?Whether its 12 p.m. or 8 p.m., figure out when you need to stop drinking caffeine for the day based on when you go to sleep. Drinking pop (or soda) or coffee too late in the day can lead to restless nights.
7. Know where to exercise on campus.?Case Western Reserve has many options for exercise, including a pool, tennis courts, a rock wall and more.?Find out the hours,?and take a friend! If you?re looking for an active way to make friends, check out the numerous athletic, dance or performance clubs on campus.
