India clears way for bigger foreign investment in banks

NEW DELHI | Tue Dec 18, 2012 8:45pm IST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Lok Sabha cleared a path for more foreign investment in the banking sector by approving a bill to increase shareholders' voting rights, after dropping a controversial clause allowing banks to trade in commodity futures.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government is racing against the clock to pass reforms economists say are needed to breathe life into Asia's third-largest economy, which is headed for the worst year of growth in a decade.

Progress so far has been slow.

The banking bill is the only piece of major reform legislation to be passed in a parliament session again disrupted by protests and shouting matches. The session ends on Thursday.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told parliament the government was abandoning efforts to pass a bill this session to open India's cash-strapped insurance sector to foreign investment - a move eagerly watched by investors.

Another bill aimed at easing land acquisition for infrastructure and mining projects was also deferred to next year.

The banking bill will increase shareholders' voting rights to 26 percent from 10 percent in private sector banks, making investment more attractive to foreign players.

The bill will now move to the upper house of parliament for voting on Thursday, where it is also likely to be passed as it is backed by India's two biggest parties.

The legislation clears the way for more corporate houses to run banks by enabling the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to issue new bank licences. That will boost the government's drive to expand access to financial services in a country where more than half the 1.2 billion population is without a bank account.

"The raising of voting cap will have a positive impact in attracting funds as it will help foreign investors to have more say in banks," said Jagannadham Thunguntla, head of research at brokerage firm SMC Global Securities.

The main opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) threw its weight behind the bill after the government dropped a clause allowing banks to trade commodities futures amid fears it could lead to risky, speculative trading.

"It will lead to better investor interest in the smaller private sector banks. It is also a sentiment booster, and it will pave the way for the Reserve Bank of India to issue new banking licences," said Sujan Hajra, chief economist at Anand Rathi Securities in Mumbai.

HAVING MORE SAY

India has struggled for years to reform and liberalise state-dominated sectors such as banking, insurance and pensions due to political opposition, including from within the ruling Congress party.

The banking bill will give the RBI greater regulatory oversight over local banks and the ability to overrule boards when the banks are facing financial difficulties. The RBI had demanded more oversight as a precondition to issuing new banking licences.

The bill also enables the government to raise voting rights in state banks such as the State Bank of India (SBI.NS) to 10 percent from just 1 percent now, acceding partially to foreign investors' demands to have more say in Indian banking.

The bank employees unions, reluctant that any control is ceded, have strongly opposed this move for years and are set to strike on Thursday in protest.

The bill will allow foreign banks to convert their Indian operations into local subsidiaries or transfer shareholding to a holding company of the bank without paying stamp duty.

Foreign banks have long sought these changes to the law which they say would encourage them to expand their operations in India. Under current laws, foreign banks such as Citibank (C.N) and Standard Chartered Plc (STAN.L) have to pay 20-30 percent tax as capital gains and stamp duty when transferring branches to a new legal entity.

    Apparent headbutt mars Everton-Stoke draw

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 12:54 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2012

STOKE, England (AP) -An apparent headbutt by Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini marred his team's 1-1 draw at Stoke in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Fellaini lunged at Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross as they jostled at a second-half corner but it wasn't seen by match officials. The Belgium international could still find himself in trouble when Football Association disciplinary chiefs look at the incident on Monday.

"I have told him in the dressing room that it is not acceptable - I won't accept it as a manager that he does that," Everton manager David Moyes said.

"It should have been a sending-off. . If the referee (Mark Halsey) had been able to see it, it should have been."

Everton would have gone level on points with third-place Chelsea had it maintained the lead given to the visitors by Shawcross' own goal in the 36th minute.

Kenwyne Jones equalized with a header in the 50th for his first goal in 28 league appearances, preserving Stoke's unbeaten record at home this season.

"I told the lads at halftime to go and give it a blast and we had four other great opportunities to score a second," Stoke manager Tony Pulis said.

Kyrie Irving Jaw Injury: Cavs Star To Play With Protective Mask After Breaking Bone In Jaw Against Bucks

    Kyrie Irving

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving broke a bone in his jaw during Friday's game against Milwaukee.

Irving, who only recently returned after missing 11 games with a broken finger, did not travel with the team to New York so he could be fitted with a protective mask that he will wear in Saturday's game against the Knicks.

Irving was injured when he took a hard fall in the first quarter. He was knocked down and hit the side of his face in the foul lane. Irving was in obvious pain but remained in the game. Last season's NBA rookie of the year finished with 26 points in 36 minutes.

This is the latest injury for Irving, who broke his hand this summer. His college career at Duke was limited to 11 games because of a foot injury.

In the 7th grade, DD(atthetime13) got Duke TIP Grand Recognition for her SAT score.

DD(now17) got back her junior PSAT results a few days ago, and was one question away from a perfect score (and she was rushing and misread the one that she missed- it was a VERY simple math question). I would think that perfect scores are not extremely uncommon, but a google search yielded that only 100 or so students get it a year, which makes me think that her score is probably in the upper 99th percentile, which would be considered "HG."

It took the school system until the end of the 5th grade to figure out that she was gifted, and while I now have no doubt that she is gifted, highly gifted seems like a bit of a stretch. She does what it takes to make decent grades, but not "amazing" grades. She really has no subject that she is amazingly skilled at, but instead is equally good at everything. When she got her PSAT scores back, she noticed that kids who have much better grades than her got much lower PSAT scores (and she didn't prepare much for the PSAT, so I don't think that was the difference).

So I'm just wondering, are some people just really good at standardized tests? When she took a diagnostic PSAT that the school offered having not studied at all, she got a 234, so I don't think her score on the actual test was inflated because she went to a few PSAT classes at the school...

And if she is able to score so high on the PSAT, should we be expecting all A's? Or is that just unreasonable since she is in hard classes and is working fairly hard? DH scored way lower on his tests yet was valedictorian, so maybe he is just basing his expectations on that? (don't worry, we are proud of her no matter what, but when she gets near perfect scores like these, we wonder what amazing things she could do if she worked harder)

reading this ... boredom comes to mind. Is she at all interested in the classes she's taking? Also ... form my own experience ... lower grades may be a "defense system" for her. I was always stressing over getting straight As when I was in elementary and middle school. Getting a C ONCE was the end of the world for me! In high school I one day figured told myself that the world does NOT end with getting grades other than As and let myself miss questions, didn't stress over every little test ... I realized that NOT having As all the time made me happier when I DID in fact get them and people's expectations around me were lower so I actually got praised for good grades rather than my parents and everyone else saying "what else is new?" when I kept straight As all the time. ... I hope this makes sense? Not sure if that applies in your daughter's case but it might be something to consider?

It took the school system until the end of the 5th grade to figure out that she was gifted, and while I now have no doubt that she is gifted, highly gifted seems like a bit of a stretch.

I suspect you're thinking of "highly gifted" as equating with high academic achievement in traditional schools (which is often how it's defined by educators too :)). There really isn't any rule of nature that says people with extremely high ability are also going to be the highest achiever in school or that the highest achievers are always the students with the highest ability. There is more that plays into high achievement in school than simply ability - motivation, passion, caring about grades, having certain types of academic strengths etc. Sometimes the highest ability children are simply going to be bored in regular school and not care about their grades. Sometimes the not-quite-so-highest-ability kids are going to be so driven by their personality type that they will achieve great things.

I am not a testing expert, but I believe the PSAT, and the SAT, both have components of the test that are dependent on ability, not achievement in school - so it's not going to be so terribly easy for a student who is simply getting great grades to score super-high on either if they don't also have high ability - so I think it's more than likely that your dd is HG and has some pretty amazing intellectual abilities smile Maybe she just hasn't found what she's passionate about yet.

Congrats to your dd on her great scores!!!

Thanks for taking time to respond!

@Mk13- yes, I do think she has a philosophy similar to that. She tries hard to get the best grades that she can, but she definitely isn't scared of getting a B if it is a very hard class...

@polarbear- that's true. I think one problem DD has is that she does not work on assignments over time. If a reading is due, she will do it the night before. If she needs to study, she will do it the night before, etc. I'm sure that this does hurt her grades a bit and I'm sure a lot of the kids with higher grades are better about this. (though I know that this is a problem that plagues many if not even most students).
I think you are right about not having an area she is passionate about yet, because I don't even know if she has just one. She's the kind of person that will, cook an amazing meal (she's vegetarian so doesn't eat the food that I cook), then compose a song on the piano, then read for a few minutes and get bored, work on homework for a few minutes, watch TV, finish up homework, finish a crossword puzzle in 10 minutes, offer to go to the grocery store, etc, all in the span of a few hours. She is forever on the move and isn't really a fan of staying in one place for a long time, physically or mentally. I wouldn't call her the traditionally "nerdy" kid who is always reading, because honestly, she doesn't want to sit still for that long... In the same way, she loves learning about anything, for a few days. And then she wants to learn about something else, and so on and so forth.

Yes, I do think that there is such a thing as a savant ability to take standardized tests.

    I'm living proof.

I was what could (only very charitably) be termed an "indifferent" student throughout high school-- and my GPA showed it. Oh, sure-- I am 'gifted.' I'm HG, in fact. But I had a 2.4 GPA. (Er-- or thereabouts. I'm not sure, but I definitely had a few grades LOWER than "C" on that transcript.)

But still-- every standardized exam I've ever taken I've hit a home run with. The same way that you've reported-- the kind of "WOW!!" performance that seems completely incongruous with the rest of the person everyone knows. National Merit Semi-finalist (easily making the cut), etc.

My DD is a natural test-taker, too. She just flies on the adrenaline, I think. I don't know enough about her internal landscape to tell you what is going on in her head. But I can tell you that I'm someone who enters a flow state during standardized exams. I'm just seriously in the zone-- it's showtime, I guess. Like I'm working the NYT crossword puzzle, or the world's biggest Sudoku or something. It just FEELS like play while I'm doing it. It's a rush. I'd take the GRE every day just for fun, basically. I liked it that much.

I'm not really "that smart" if you were to meet me and talk to me, though. I just happen to enjoy taking standardized exams, and-- well, whatever a HG person tends to pursue that way, they tend to be pretty extraordinarily good at, too, YK?

Congrats to her on the excellent score, by the way! smile

    Bassetlover,
In reference to your daughter, you may enjoy reading about the scanner personality concept:
    http://getmotivation.com/articlelib/articles/barbara_sher_scanner.html

It's an interesting concept and very descriptive of myself, too. I see some other similarities in your descriptions. It sounds like your daughter is very intrinsically motivated. One of the things to counter boredom particularly with a strong inner passion for learning is to have your own learning objectives in classes. Grades then very rarely reflect the actual learning, but rather reflect an alignment between the learner's learning objectives and the teacher's pedagogical objectives.

"...are some people just really good at standardized tests?"

Yes! My ex-H and I are two of them, and second D inherited this from us. None of us have great grades (ex-H was a serious slacker, I was around a 3.5 in high school and a 3.3 in college). But ex-H got into Georgetown Law on the strength of his LSATs (nearly perfect), in spite of slacker grades. D has an unweighted 3.7 in HS, but her SATs were 800-780-800, with 800 on two SAT subject tests. She kind of does what she has to in order to get at least an A- in most classes, pulls As in a few she really likes, doesn't do well at all in French which she hates. And she would rather study for Quiz Bowl or watch an episode of Sherlock for the 10th time than work any harder.

This is me too. I test in the "HG" range, and my grades in school were a direct reflection of my level of interest or lack thereof. I did fine on tests though. In fact, I love taking tests (my competitive side comes out, lol).

Ebola virus uses a protein decoy to subvert the host immune response

    Friday, December 14, 2012

In a study published today in the Open Access journal PLOS Pathogens, researchers at Emory University have discovered a potentially important mechanism by which the Ebola virus alters and evades the immune response of its infected host.

Ebola virus is the causative agent of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF), a disease with up to 90 percent mortality. While human outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever have been confined to Africa, Ebola virus infections in bats, the presumed natural reservoir of the virus, have also been detected in Europe and Asia.

The high lethality of the disease, combined with its short incubation period and the lack of vaccines or effective treatments, makes Ebola virus a significant public health threat as well as a potentially devastating biological weapon. Efforts to develop a vaccine against Ebola virus have been met with limited success, and it is likely that the virus employs complex immune evasion mechanisms that present unique challenges for vaccine design. Understanding these evasion mechanisms is a critical first step in developing an effective vaccine.

In this study, the authors examined the role of a protein secreted in large quantities by Ebola virus-infected cells. The protein shares regions with a membrane protein that the virus expresses on its surface and uses to initiate the infection process. The authors studied antibodies generated by immunizing mice with the viral surface protein and/or the secreted protein. They determined that the secreted protein can selectively drive induction of antibody responses to itself and also compete for antibodies to the viral surface protein that would otherwise bind to and inactivate the virus.

"Our findings provide an explanation for the lack of protective antibodies against the viral surface protein in patients who have survived Ebola virus infection," says Dr. Chinglai Yang, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the Emory University School of Medicine. "We hypothesize that the secreted protein allows the virus to subvert the host antibody response in vivo, and that this may enable the virus to cause repeated or sustained infection in its natural reservoir."

The results suggest that immunity induced by a vaccine may need to reach a sufficient threshold to effectively neutralize the incoming virus to protect against Ebola virus infection. These findings raise new challenges for Ebola vaccine design, as vaccines will most likely have to be tailored to overcome or avoid the ability of the secreted decoy protein to interfere with host immune responses. Such approaches could enable the development of more efficacious vaccines to prevent Ebola virus infection.

    Putin's drive for Russian identity

In a big speech Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin said Russians lack 'spiritual braces.' He joins other world leaders who recently made similar warnings about their people. Should governments, especially those with weak democratic credentials, be promoting moral values?

    By the Monitor's Editorial Board / December 13, 2012

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a state-of-the nation address in Moscow Dec. 12.

    AP

Now it is Vladimir Putin?s turn. In a major speech Wednesday after retaking the presidency last May, the Russian leader joined a chorus of world leaders who are speaking openly of their country?s moral and spiritual lives.

?It pains me to speak of this ... but Russian society today lacks spiritual braces ? kindness, sympathy, compassion toward one another, support and mutual assistance, a deficit of that which has always, throughout history, made us stronger,? he said in an address to lawmakers in Moscow.

His words echo those of China?s premier, Wen Jiabao, who recently warned that ?the fostering of the moral culture is lagging.? His comments were reflected in a recent Communist Party pledge to ?enrich the people?s spiritual lives.?

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak proclaimed last year that ?the entire nation is rotten,? while in India this week, President Pranab Mukherjee said that the country needs to strive for spiritual development ?to regain lost values and traditions in this age.? And last December, British Prime Minister David Cameron declared that ?we?ve got to stand up for our values if we are to confront the slow-motion moral collapse that has taken place in parts of our country these past few generations.?

Secular leaders usually tread warily into the moral realm. Many do so simply to shore up their popularity or unify the nation rather than to act as spiritual counselor to the wayward masses. It is with that skepticism that many in Russia viewed Mr. Putin?s speech.

Since he retook the presidency last year ? sparking unusual protests by young people ? Putin has searched for a ?national idea? to fill a void in society left by the collapse of the Soviet Union more than two decades ago. He warned of ?tough competition? for values and a threat to national sovereignty, patriotism, and identity. In October, he ordered his staff to come up with ways to ?strengthen the spiritual and moral foundations of Russian society.?

He has elevated the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church in public affairs, encouraged couples to have more children, and begun a crackdown on corrupt officials. He even suggested punishment for officials who move their money overseas.

Part of his concern may be that 19 percent of the country?s 143 million people say they are not Russian. Russia has 21 autonomous republics with different ethnicities or religions, such as Islam. He may also want to claim Russia has unique values as distinct from those in the West in order to prevent the kind of ?color? revolutions seen in Ukraine and Georgia.

At the same time, he admits the state can?t impose values on people. ?Any attempts of the government to intervene with people?s beliefs are effectively a sign of totalitarian rule. It?s absolutely out of the question. It?s not our way,? he said in the speech. All the government can do is protect spirituality, not spread it. For now, that has translated into prosecution of those who belittle the Orthodox church.

Putin faces a difficult task to move from his past promise of providing stability and order to one of shaping a moral society. Fewer than 1 in 20 Orthodox Christians say they know the Ten Commandments, according to a Levada Center poll. Social problems, from alcoholism to unwed mothers, are growing. Many of the wealthy send their children abroad for schooling.

Like many world leaders, Putin is reaching for a solution that isn?t really the government?s role. But whatever his motive, at least he has put his finger on what Russians must do for themselves.

7 Big Time Profit Tips For Paid Traffic | B.O.M.B. Business Owners ...

    ?

    • The real secret to online traffic and why optimization is so important to online marketing.
    • Why you must track every ad and how to start each test safely.
    • How to turn a campaign losing money into a winner by following your visitors around the web.

    ?

    ?

?How do I get more traffic to my site??

That?s what everyone is continually asking. But there?s NO lack of traffic sources out there.

There?s Adwords, Bing, 7Search, Facebook, Trafficvance, Leadimpact, Adready, Advertise, Sitescout, Pulse360, Adbright, Bidvertiser, Tribalfusion, Valueclick, Kontera?

And we?re just getting warmed up. I?m not going to list all of them here. There?s no lack of traffic out there. It?s just a question of building a funnel that converts visitors into sales.

Here are 7 quick tips for profiting from paid traffic.

    1. Track everything

If you?re not tracking, you?re losing money. It?s as simple as that.

Every penny you spend on advertising should be tracked. I personally use a couple of tracking programs. The first one is the ad tracker built into?www.netofficetoolbox.com. This one is perfect for anywhere I just need a single link, like when running email solo ads. I also use it with offline ads like postcards. I buy a domain name just for the postcard mailing and have the domain name redirect through the ad tracker to my landing page.

You could even set-up ?goals? inside of free Google Analytics to track a majority of your online marketing campaigns.? Plus there are dozens of other trackers available online.?? It doesn?t so much which tracker you use.? Just track all your ads.

    2.??? Test small

Let?s say you?re buying your first solo ad in an email newsletter. Their audience sounds right for your offer. And you know your page converts. It did on the last 5 ads you ran in other newsletters.

Should you buy the mailing to 10,000 people for $100 or the 50,000 person mailing for $300?

From experience I?d recommend the smaller $100 mailing. Yes, the top one looks like a bargain, but every new ad source is a new test. Your previous results don?t mean anything here.

Test the small ad first. If it?s profitable, expand into the larger ad.

If you?re advertising where they offer a daily budget option, USE it. Only risk what you can afford to lose.

    3. ?Plan for optimization

It?s a rare occasion when an ad succeeds right out of the gate.

Instead, what commonly happens is it only returns a fraction of your expense. You spend $100 and only get $30 back on your first run.

Is it time to give up and quit? Maybe this ad source isn?t right for you. So you try another and the exact same thing happens. Over and over again.

Advertising is all about staying in the game until you win. Let?s say you?re running Adwords. You test keywords, ad text, landing pages, sales copy, and follow-up. Those are 5 places you can improve and optimize and we?re just getting warmed up.

Your initial ad is simply a starting point for the optimization process to begin. That?s why tracking everything is so vital. You have to know which keywords, ads, and landing pages are producing the good results.

    4. ?Test shouts instead of whispers

Your first tests shouldn?t be headline color or which font is the best. It should be a totally different offer or headline. Change the entire layout of the landing page.

Concentrate first on what?s above the fold (the first screen of info before someone scrolls). Put more emphasis on the response button.

    5. ?Focus on the offer

Your initial offer is everything. It?s more important than the headline or the photos. Can you offer a low cost trial period? How about an ?insane? guarantee?

How does your offer stand out from the competition?

Test going directly for a low cost sale versus going for an opt-in only.

With information products, I?m almost always better off going for an opt-in (quick tip ? asking for ?email only? boosts my conversion by 20% or more over asking for name and email).

    6. Reverse-engineer winning competitors

If someone keeps running ads in the same places (Adwords, solo ads, magazines, banners, etc.), study their conversion process.

What is their unique promise? What do they ask you to do when you land on their page. What are they sending out to their email list?

You may even want to buy their product to see what they offer on the backend.

Analyze a few of the top competitors and you can make a list of ?requirements? for being in that market. Then compare your offer and how you can stand out as unique.

    7. ?Test adding remarketing to your mix

The advertising I?ve consistently seen clients profit the most from is remarketing campaigns. A 3-to-1 or 4-to-1 profit to expense ratio isn?t uncommon.

Remarketing is where you cookie your visitors, and then can show banners to them no matter what sites they?re on.

If you visit a site about ?running shoes,? you may find yourself surrounded by banners about those running shoes even if you?re checking the weather, reading a blog, or at a forum about dogs.

This type of advertising ISN?T where you go first though. You need to already have a good foundation of traffic coming to your site to cookie and follow-up on.

The reason it?s so important going in is because I have a couple of clients who are only close to break even on other sources of traffic such as Adwords. Their profits don?t come in until they ad on remarketing campaigns to keep following up on the visitors from their other sources of traffic.

There are quite a few remarketing networks, but?www.adroll.com?is a good one to get started with.

'Scandal': Olivia Betrayed, Huck Arrested For Assassination Attempt On President (VIDEO)

  • "The Bachelor"

<strong>"The Bachelor," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> You really think we've seen the last rose handed out? Not in a million years. ABC has already tapped their next "Bachelorette," and we know they'll have their eyes peeled for a hot rejected man from that spinoff to be the next "Bachelor."

  • "The Bachelorette"

<strong>"The Bachelorette," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Bachelor" Brad's also-ran Emily Maynard is getting her turn as the rose giver for the seventh season of "The Bachelorette" this summer. As long as there are people willing to look for love on reality TV, this show will keep on trucking.

  • "Body of Proof"

<strong>"Body of Proof," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Body of Proof" has been falling below its timeslot competitor, CBS's "Unforgettable," but it still draws a decent audience and its fans are very vocal. ABC has decided it deserves a third season.

  • "Castle"

<strong>"Castle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show's ratings have definitely suffered without "Dancing With the Stars" airing beforehand, but it is a consistent performer. And now that Castle and Beckett's relationship is evolving, a fifth season of "oh yes they will" is a no-brainer.

  • "Charlie's Angels"

<strong>"Charlie's Angels," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not really a shock for anybody, but "Charlie's Angels" is cooked. Flimsy story, bad remake, questionable casting.

  • "Cougar Town"

<strong>"Cougar Town," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed -- for TBS!<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The Season 3 ratings weren't boosted much by holding this show until midseason, but ABC's wonky air schedule also didn't help ... which is why the news that TBS has picked up the show for a fourth season is huge. Cheers with your Big Carl!

  • "Dancing With the Stars"

<strong>"Dancing With the Stars," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "DWTS" may have lost its luster in the ratings, but if the viewers are still coming.

  • "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23"

<strong>"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC's new bleep-worthy comedy starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek is a funny one, and definitely embraces the quirk (Beek Jeans!), so we're excited to see what they do with a second season.

  • "Desperate Housewives"

<strong>"Desperate Housewives," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After countless deaths, murders, betrayals and natural disasters on Wisteria Lane over the show's eight seasons, the ladies of "Desperate Housewives" will say goodbye forever this May.

  • "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

<strong>"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After a whopping nine seasons, the do-gooding show came to an end in January. But worry not, it will continue to have a few specials to make viewers cry tears of joy.

  • "GCB"

<strong>"GCB," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Desperate Housewives"-esque dramedy premiered to less than 8 million viewers, and the phenomenal cast (Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Leslie Bibb) couldn't bring in a Texas-sized audience, so ABC canceled it.

  • "Grey's Anatomy"

<strong>"Grey's Anatomy," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is a ratings juggernaut, even in its eighth season, and with most of her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo_n_1506113.html?ref=tv" target="_hplink">big stars signed on for more</a>, ABC gave the go-ahead for a ninth season.

  • "Happy Endings"

<strong>"Happy Endings," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show is way too "ca-yute" to bubble it, and obviously someone high up at ABC agrees. After its first season was moved around and aired all out of order, the network still gave it another chance to find its audience in Season 2 ... and it has, and hopefully will continue to in Season 3.

  • "Last Man Standing"

<strong>"Last Man Standing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ratings for Tim Allen's return to sitcoms have been very strong, making it Tuesday's most-watched comedy. If you can beat "Glee" and "The Biggest Loser," a second season is a given.

  • "Man Up!"

    <strong>"Man Up!," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC pulled the show after eight episodes.

  • "The Middle"

<strong>"The Middle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, "The Middle" is still holding onto its middle position in the ratings on Wednesday nights, and that seems just about right. It doesn't do "American Idol" or "Survivor" numbers, of course, but with over 7 million viewers, it's a strong comedy for the network that easily beats anything NBC is offering.

  • "Missing"

<strong>"Missing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ashley Judd lead this drama about a former CIA agent whose son goes missing, kicking her back into action to find him. The series was only set to air 10 episodes, miniseries-style, with the potential for more, but a cancellation means that's all they're getting.

  • "Modern Family"

<strong>"Modern Family," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Modern Family" remains ABC's biggest sitcom success story of the last decade, both in ratings and awards love. This critical darling is getting a fourth season of hijinks with the hilarious Pritchett-Dunphy clan.

  • "Once Upon A Time"

<strong>"Once Upon A Time," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Once Upon a Time" has gotten praise for being one of the more family-friendly dramas on TV, and it's been pulling in close to 10 million viewers each week because of it. We're excited by the almost endless possibilities for new fairy tale-inspired stories to tackle in Season 2.

  • "Pan Am"

<strong>"Pan Am," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Poor "Pan Am" just never quite took off. The series' vintage look actually worked against it, much like NBC's swiftly canceled "Playboy Club" -- guess when you're being compared to award-winning shows like "Mad Men," it makes it more than a little tough to live up to the hype.

  • "Private Practice"

<strong>"Private Practice," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Private Practice" has never gotten "Grey's Anatomy"-level ratings, and things got shakier when ABC bumped it to Tuesday nights to make room for creator Shonda Rhimes' <em>other</em> new show, "Scandal," but they've given the show a sixth season order.

  • "Revenge"

<strong>"Revenge," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With a clever mix of drama, mystery and serious revenge-ing, this is hands down one of the most addictive new shows on TV, and we can't wait to see where they take things in Season 2.

  • "The River"

<strong>"The River," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The promise of "Paranormal Activity"-like scares each week quickly fizzled after this show premiered, along with the ratings. The first season's eight episodes came and went, and ABC has nixed any plans for more.

  • "Scandal"

<strong>"Scandal," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' latest show isn't about doctors at all -- and that's why we're glad it's sticking around. Kerry Washington is amazing as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer with a crack team of specialists helping make bad headlines vanish before they're ever written. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

  • "Shark Tank"

<strong>"Shark Tank," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, this reality competition show is unlike any other on network TV and ABC is keeping it around for more for that very reason.

  • "Suburgatory"

<strong>"Suburgatory," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's smart, quick and not too cute -- "Suburgatory" is consistently named the sitcom you should be watching, but probably aren't. The great cast makes this one a no-brainer, and the ratings have stayed pretty consistent, too. We're thrilled it's getting a second season to shine!

  • "Work It"

    <strong>"Work It," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Let us count the ways ...

  • "2 Broke Girls"

<strong>"2 Broke Girls," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>At first, people balked at the racist supporting characters, but now it seems that audiences are all over "2 Broke Girls" -- it's ratings have seen a steady increase, and it won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy.

  • "A Gifted Man"

<strong>"A Gifted Man," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>"A Gifted Man's" total viewer numbers were OK for a Friday night, but a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic is especially bad for CBS. Another bad sign: star Patrick Wilson tweeted about the end: "I had a great time. Thanks to my fans. So happy it's done." And done it is.

  • "The Amazing Race"

<strong>"The Amazing Race," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

  • "The Big Bang Theory"

<strong>"The Big Bang Theory," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

  • "Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

  • "Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

  • "CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.<br />

  • "CSI: Miami"

<strong>"CSI: Miami," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Out of the three (!) "CSI" programs on the air, "CSI: Miami" is the one to say goodbye first. The one-time ratings giant has been affected by football overruns (just as "The Good Wife" has) and "CSI: NY" has the edge in terms of total viewers, meaning a "Miami" sunset was inevitable. <br />

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of the two "CSI" spinoffs, "CSI: NY" is the stronger -- pulling in more than 10 million viewers on a Friday night is no easy task -- and with "CSI: Miami" canceled, "CSI: NY's" renewal was a no-brainer.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This critical darling suffered after its move from Tuesdays to Sundays thanks to sports overruns. The viewers are frustrated, but given its strong cast and Emmy love, the show is still coming back for more.

  • "Hawaii Five-0"

    <strong>"Hawaii Five-0," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite the scheduling setback as Alex O'Loughlin seeks treatment, Season 2 is still doing well for CBS in a very competitive timeslot.<br />

  • "How To Be a Gentleman"

<strong>"How To Be A Gentleman," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not even having "The Big Bang Theory" as a lead-in could save this David Hornsby project, which only lasted three episodes.

  • "How I Met Your Mother"

<strong>"How I Met Your Mother," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> CBS renewed "How I Met Your Mother" for two more seasons in March 2011, so fans can look forward to being strung along about the titular mother's identity for a bit longer.<br />

  • "The Mentalist"

<strong>"The Mentalist," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Although the show hit a season ratings low in the middle of February, its fanbase and overall ratings were enough to have it return for another season.

  • "Mike & Molly"

<strong>"Mike & Molly," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Thanks to an Emmy win and Oscar nomination, Melissa McCarthy is a Hollywood power player and CBS is keen to keep her around. Just look at the multiple pilots she has in the works as a behind the scenes player! "Mike & Molly" will be back for a third season.

  • "NCIS"

<strong>"NCIS," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The long-running procedural has become a ratings juggernaut at a time when most shows start shedding viewers. Season 10 is now happening.

  • "NCIS: Los Angeles"

<strong>"NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has gone up in the ratings over the last couple of years, and people can't get enough of L.L. Cool J and Chris O'Donnell.

  • "NYC 22"

<strong>"NYC 22," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Rookie Blue" clone from executive producer Robert DeNiro didn't really move the needle when it premiered midseason; CBS officially axed it with three episodes left to air.

  • "Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With ratings matching juggernauts like "Grey's Anatomy" and fans popping up everywhere, we'll be seeing another season of "Person of Interest."

  • "Rob"

<strong>"Rob," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Rob's" spot after ratings juggernaut "The Big Bang Theory" probably went a long way in helping it survive to see the end of its first season, but that's as far as it'll get.

  • "Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has moved around so much it's hard to remember when it's on, and with six seasons under its belt it's had quite a nice run. Despite slipping ratings and the aforementioned constant switcheroos, there's still a future for "Rules of Engagement."

  • "Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of <em>course</em> we have "Survivor" coming back for another season. Where else are we going to see petty squabbles and insane behavior on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite a less-than-favorable critical response, the revamped "Two and a Half Men" keeps pulling in respectable numbers every week. Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones will all return for a Season 10.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The inherent addictiveness of this show has gone a long way in securing loyal viewers -- it has been on top of the ratings several times this season alone.
