Curiosity's Mars exploration: Is it worth the money?

The search for life on Mars has captivated the imaginations of many, but it is costly. Some say it's time to cut spending on NASA's Mars missions, while others say the research is important in the quest for understanding the 'meaning of life.' ?

Humans have launched 40 spacecraft to the Red Planet, lured by the prospect that life might once have existed in what is now dry rocks and sand. The latest machine to make the journey is NASA?s?Mars?Science Laboratory, a hulking, souped-up lab-on-wheels that will plunge toward the Martian surface next week.

But even as excitement builds, some wonder: Is?Mars?exploration a good investment?

It certainly doesn?t come cheap. It?s hard to calculate a total price tag, but over the 48 years that NASA has been launching missions to?Mars, Americans have spent a significant sum. The Viking missions alone cost nearly $1 billion ? in 1970s dollars. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity cost a total of about $1 billion to build and operate as well.

Curiosity, as the?Mars?Science Laboratory rover is known, is over budget at $2.5 billion.

Some in the federal government have suggested it?s time to roll back the spending. President Barack Obama?s fiscal plan for 2013 would cut NASA?s funds for?Mars?exploration from $587 million to $360 million.

Proponents insist?Mars?science is vital for the U.S. More visits to our next-door neighbor could answer lingering questions about Earth?s history, reinforce U.S. prestige and get more children interested in science.

It also could bring humanity closer to answering the ultimate question: Are we alone in the universe?

?It?s the search for the meaning of life,? said Alden Munson, a senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, a science and technology think tank based in Arlington, Va.

America?s love affair with?Mars?can be traced to astronomer Percival Lowell, who turned his telescope to the Red Planet in the 1890s and thought he saw an intricate system of canals that must have been built by intelligent beings. He never found them, of course, but Martians became a science fiction mainstay.

Earthlings got their first up-close view of?Mars? rocky surface in 1965, when Mariner 4 flew by and photographed a surface that appeared as dead as the moon?s ? lacking water or active geology, two prerequisites for life.

But later missions, from the Mariner 9 orbiter to Spirit and Opportunity, helped establish?Mars?as a useful comparative laboratory for studying climate and geophysics on Earth. They demonstrated that the planet was once warmer and wetter than it is now. Long ago, it may have been a hospitable cradle for life.

When planetary scientists assembled recently at the behest of the National Academies to set research priorities for the next decade, the search for conditions that would allow life to emerge on?Mars?topped the list.

Radical change in our understanding of personalized medicine, new ...

B?ttinger and his team at the Institut Charles R. Bronfman for personalized medicine to help other medical centers across the country driving during replication of their study. Also, continue to expand the number of donors consented to the Biobank Mount Sinai, in an effort to discover genetic markers of the disease and more connections between population groups identified. To date, genomic studies have overwhelmingly focused on populations of European origin, raising concerns about the applicability of the results to determine the risk of disease and response to treatment for non-Europeans, and in particular, different genetic backgrounds receiving medical care in urban centers.

Based on their results, researchers at the Bronfman Institute are evaluating the potential clinical utility of hundreds of genetic markers for serious diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes, and response to different drugs , throughout the Biobank of samples. The goal is to identify genetic markers that may be useful in predicting the risk of disease in local populations with different genetic backgrounds. The project will be completed by all 20,000 samples of banks by the end of 2011.

?We expect the results for the first time, will lead us to select the appropriate genetic markers, and allow us to provide personalized genomic medicine for patients of different communities at Mount Sinai, who are being treated for diabetes and heart, kidney and liver diseases, among other conditions, ?says Dr. B?ttinger.

RADIANT is conducted in approximately 240 centers in the United States, Canada, Western Europe and Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific and Argentina. The study included patients with stage IB-IIIA NSCLC surgically removed tumors that have EGFR-positive, as measured by immunohistochemistry and / or fluorescence in situ hybridization , and who had completed four cycles of standard adjuvant therapy with platinum chemotherapy or chemotherapy have been naive. Patients were randomized 2:1 to receive Tarceva 150 mg or placebo once daily for two years.

?Our data indicate the importance of assessing patient populations at the local level,? said Dr. B?ttinger. ?Now that we are able to determine the genotype distribution of our patients, we can begin to develop tests and treatments tailored to the diverse communities we serve, which enables us to provide highly effective, personalized care.?

Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine, patient consent forms that represent the various communities around The Mount Sinai Medical Center, who confidentially provide DNA samples and plasma to help research in genomics and personalized medicine. The researchers used state of the art genomic technology to determine the genetic makeup, or genotype, of nearly 1,000 local Biobank participants identified themselves as European American, African-American or Hispanic.

They found that there was a continuum with the genetic ancestry at the individual level African American and Hispanic patients who receive care at Mount Sinai ? which means large portions of their genome came from African or mixed European descent, respectively ? and with it genetic variants that indicate the risk of developing a disease.

TNT Q2 profit improves while awaiting UPS takeover

(AP) ? TNT Express NV, the express delivery company that is awaiting approval from European regulators for a takeover by United Parcel Service, reported better second quarter earnings thanks to a significant reduction in losses at its Brazilian operations.

Net profit was ?40 million ($49.2 million), up from just ?4 million in the same period a year ago, the company said Monday. Sales grew 1.7 percent to ?1.83 billion, with volumes up in Europe. However, European profits fell due to business customers opting for cheaper options.

UPS made its ?5.2 billion, or ?9.50 per share, bid for TNT in March. In July the European Commission said the deal would need closer examination. TNT repeated Monday it expects the deal to close in the fourth quarter. TNT shares closed at ?8.812 Friday.

Hongkong Parents oppose - UNITY MEDIA NEWS Network

Thousands of stroller-pushing Hong Kong parents and activists protest a plan to introduce national education lessons, slamming it as a bid to brainwash children with Chinese propaganda.

Hong Kong: Thousands of Hong Kong parents marched in the streets on Sunday in protest against a school curriculum plan they said was an attempt to brainwash students by extolling the achievements of the Chinese Communist party.
The controversy is the latest backlash against perceived political influence from Beijing in the former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
The furor focuses on a Hong Kong government-funded 34-page book titled ?The China Model? celebrating China?s single party Communist state as a unique political system under which its economy and society have flourished.

The book will form the basis of a national education curriculum for students aged six years and older in Hong Kong schools in the coming year.

?We don?t want our child to be fed this material, said P.S. Ho, who joined the protest along with his wife and four-year-old daughter.

?If the initiative continues without changes, maybe we will change schools later or immigrate to another country.?

Parents with children in strollers, secondary school students and activists joined the rally on a sweltering afternoon, carrying placards and handing out pamphlets decrying the education plan.
A police officer estimated the crowd to be about 19,000 which is considered sizeable by Hong Kong standards.

?Parents are concerned. We don?t want them to brainwash our children?s minds,? said Linda Wong, a member of a parent concern group and a mother of one.

While the booklet touches on some negative aspects of contemporary Chinese history including unfair land grabs by corrupt officials and a toxic milk powder scandal, it makes no mention of the June 4 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing?s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

It also describes the US political system as having ?created social turbulence and is harmful to people?s livelihood.?

?This material is given to elementary school students. They don?t have the independent thinking capabilities to judge for themselves,? said Joseph Wong, 19, a member of a youth activist group.

Hong Kong officials rejected any plan to introduce Chinese-style propaganda, saying the ?China Model? booklet was only a guide.

?We definitely would not want to see any so-called brainwashing type of education from happening. If that indeed happens, which we do not believe will happen?we would be the first one to come out to condemn such a situation,? said Lee Chack-fan, chairman of a group tasked with drafting the guidelines for the national education scheme.

Mississippi church refuses to marry black couple

They had booked their wedding far in advance. The invitations had been sent, the programs printed. But one day before Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson were to be married at the Mississippi church they frequented, they said a pastor told them they would have to find another venue -- because they were black.

There has never been a black wedding at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, Miss., since its founding in 1883. According to Pastor Stan Weatherford, some church members objected so strongly to breaking that precedent, they threatened to oust him from his pastorship.

Rather than risk his job, Weatherford, who is white, said he decided to marry the pair at a black church down the road.

"My 9-year-old was going to the church with us. How would you say to your 9-year-old daughter, 'We cannot get married here because, guess what sweetie, we're black,'" Charles Wilson told ABC's affiliate WAPT-TV.

Outrage over the wedding's forced relocation swept the Jackson suburb of about 5,000 into a media firestorm.

The vast majority of Crystal Springs residents, blacks and whites alike, were "blown away" by the church's decision, said Theresa Norwood, 48, who was born in Crystal Springs and has lived there her entire life.

Norwood said she believes Weatherford should have married the Wilsons regardless of the risk to his job.

"That church was their home," she said. "What would Jesus have done? He would have married them, without a doubt, because it's the right thing to do. We're all God's children."

While the Wilsons were not members of the church, they often attended services there, and Te'Andrea's uncle is an employee of the church, and her father is a member. Charles Wilson told WAPT that the couple had planned to join as members after their wedding, which was held July 20.

Weatherford told WLBT-TV in Jackson that he would have liked to marry the couple as planned, but he decided to perform the ceremony elsewhere as a compromise to ensure that the Wilsons could be married while "addressing a need within our congregation."

Norwood, who is black, said her nephew came to worship at First Baptist Church while he was temporarily living with her, having been evacuated from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The church "made him feel at home," she said, but now she wonders whether he would return there when he visits Crystal Springs.

The church is now holding internal meetings to figure out how it should respond to future requests by black couples to be married there, Weatherford told WLBT-TV.

For her part, though, Norwood, who is dating a white man, said that if she and her boyfriend decide to get married, they will likely look for a different venue.

Reasons for Hope for Each NFL Team in 2012

Reason: Overnight offense

Why it?s enough to be excited: From the 2012 draft alone, the Browns made significant improvements to the foundation of a putrid offensive unit.

Injuries on the offensive line certainly didn?t help in 2011, as well as having a No. 1 wide receiver who hadn?t played football for an entire year.

A new coaching staff and a new system, along with a lockout-shortened offseason, spelled disaster for the Browns.

However, the following exchanges should massively upgrade the offense:

Trent Richardson for Montario Hardesty at running back, Brandon Weeden for Colt McCoy at quarterback and Mitchell Schwartz for Tony Pashos at right tackle.

A former second-round pick, Hardesty has blown out both knees and has been a minimum impact player, while Richardson is widely considered the most talented rookie back since Adrian Peterson.

The nightmarish situation of last year plagued McCoy after a promising rookie campaign. Weeden brings prototypical size and arm strength to combat NFL adversity better than McCoy.

Pashos tried to play last season with a ruptured tendon, according to Cleveland Plain Dealer beat writer Mary Kay Cabot. He has been cut and already underwent season-ending surgery.

If Schwartz?s early showing is any indication, he will fill in exceptionally right away at right tackle.

All-Pro tackle Joe Thomas has a great first impression of Schwartz already, and praised him in an interview with the Akron Beacon Journal?s Nate Ulrich:

?He?s in the meeting room already making calls and answering questions that, frankly, as a rookie, I?m kind of surprised he knows the answers to.?

Then there?s the addition of Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft.

ESPN AFC North blogger Jamison Hensley noted that Gordon has been compared to Randy Moss and Brandon Marshall from a talent standpoint.

All in all, four big pieces were added to what was a stagnant, predictable offense.

Depending on the impact each rookie can have, along with a stellar Dick Jauron-coached defense, the Browns may be in for a massive, immediate improvement.

A Discussion Regarding Internet Marketing | Linux Business Week

An increasing amount of businesses are allocating greater percentages of their promotional budgets to internet marketing. There are many reasons for this. They include the vast number of venues by which someone can promote products online, the high cost of direct mail, the number of people that could be reached via the internet, the overall cost effectiveness of promoting items online, the explosion of social networking, and the increased use of mobile devices by the general population. Each of these aspects will be reviewed further below.

To start, there are many ways to reach below via the internet. One of the most common ones is for a firm to have its own website. It would serve a company well to employ another entity to run the site and to maximize the use of search engine optimization, or SEO, throughout the website. A company can have the best looking website around, but unless it uses the right, targeted keywords to reach customers and make sales, it will not be effective. In addition to websites, firms can purchase online ads on targeted sites and market their products and services on social networking sites.

The high cost of direct mail is yet another reason why firms are increasingly promoting their products online. Between escalating postal rates, high print and mail costs, increased design and paper costs, and more, it is becoming cost prohibitive to promote too much of a business?s resources to direct mail. Direct mail used to be the cornerstone of many business to business marketing programs in years past, but this is increasingly no longer the case.

The large amount of individuals who could be reached via the internet is yet another reason why companies are becoming increasingly reliant on online promotions. Firms could reach people all throughout the day from any continent via a computer. This aspect has completely transformed who companies do business.

Another reason to promote items online is that it is cost effective. This is demonstrated by the earlier point made about how expensive it has become to send out direct mail. While start up costs for a website can be expensive, it is relatively inexpensive to maintain a site once it is in motion, and a member of the company can continually update the content on it to keep everything fresh. On top of this, it is free for firms to start their own pages on social network sites.

The explosion of social networking is yet another reason why internet marketing has taken off as it has in the past few years. These sites have millions of users across the world, and they allow for very targeted marketing. Companies can target people and other firms based on very precise demographic variables.

Last but not least, the general public?s increased use of mobile devices is a reason for companies using internet promotions more in recent years. More and more people, for example, own phones which allow them to access the net any time of day, and it thus makes sense for companies to use more online promotions.

In conclusion, internet marketing has become increasingly prominent in recent years for many reasons. These include the many ways to reach people online, the cost effectiveness of online promotions, the reach allowed by the internet, and the fact that more and more individuals use mobile devices with internet access on them.

Printed photonic crystal mirrors shrink on-chip lasers down to size

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Electrical engineers at The University of Texas at Arlington and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have devised a new laser for on-chip optical connections that could give computers a huge boost in speed and energy efficiency.

The team published its findings on July 22, 2012 in Nature Photonics.

At just 2 micrometers in height ? smaller than the width of a human hair ? the surface-emitting laser's vastly lower profile could make it cheaper and easier for manufacturers to integrate high-speed optical data connections into the microprocessors powering the next generation of computers.

Traditionally, edge-emitter lasers are considered as the candidate for on-chip optical links. But since mirrors are hard to form in such lasers and because the lasers occupy a large chip area, researchers have been challenged to find a practical way to monolithically integrate the mirrors on silicon chips.

Surface-emitting lasers necessary for a high-speed optical links between computer cores could be 20 to 30 micrometers tall, slightly bigger than one hole in the mesh of a car's oil filter. Yet the research team's engineers say that on a 1.5-micrometer wavelength optically connected chip, lasers of that size dwarf their silicon surroundings.

"It sits tall on the chip, like a tower," says Zhenqiang Ma, a UW-Madison professor of electrical and computer engineering. "That is definitely not acceptable."

Weidong Zhou, a UT Arlington professor of electrical engineering, says one challenge was integrating light into silicon chips, as silicon itself is not an efficient light emitter.

Zhou and Ma have collaborated to shrink on-chip lasers in recent years with funding from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

As a solution, the researchers propose replacing layers and layers of reflectors necessary in the traditional distributed Bragg reflector laser design with two highly reflective photonic crystal mirrors.

Composed of compound semiconductor quantum well materials, each mirror is held in place with silicon nanomembranes, extremely thin layers of a silicon.

Zhou says integrating compound semiconductor quantum wells with silicon is a promising approach. "We apply a nanomembrane transfer printing process to accomplish this goal," he says. One layer of photonic crystal is equal to about 15 to 30 layers of dielectric reflectors found in conventional lasers.

As a result, manufacturers could fabricate 2-micrometer-high lasers for data links with performance that could equal current designs.

In addition to their larger size, reflectors for conventional lasers are made of materials grown only at very high temperatures, which means they can damage the chip they are placed upon during production. Since fabrication via transfer printing can occur at much lower temperatures, Zhou and Ma hope their laser design can be used to place optical links on silicon chips with much less wasted material, time and effort.

Optical data links already exist at the largest scales of data networks ? the Internet's backbone is composed mainly of fiber-optic links between countries, cities and houses. But currently, that data moves over to slower metal connections and wiring as it travels from a regional hub to your house, your computer and eventually between the CPU cores within of the processor powering your machine.

"In the future, you'll see a move to optical at each step," Ma says. "The last step is within the chip, module to module optical links on the chip itself."

Through Semerane Inc., the Texas-based startup Zhou and Ma founded, the two hope to implement their production process in functional on-chip photonic crystal membrane lasers that could eventually be part of the next generation high-speed computer processors.

"We believe this laser will be used to make data links more practically available," Ma says.

"It is truly an interdisciplinary team effort," Zhou says. "The co-existence of photonics with electronics on the chip level shall enable multi-functional energy-efficient super-chips for applications in computing, communications, sensing, imaging and so on."

With widespread adoption of processors that use their laser design for optical links, Ma and Zhou could have a hand in increasing the speed along the local leg of the information superhighway.

"Eventually, a CPU core in America could be connected to another CPU core in Asia, with optical connections all along the chain," Ma says.

Getty ImagesHello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend?s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.

In the past week or so, there have been more than a few reports that teams around the league would love to make moves but cannot do so yet because the market is stagnant.

The Red Wings, Flames, Rangers, and more have all expressed a desire to make more things happen in their offseasons, but none have been able to do so largely because there is too much uncertainty still kicking around out there. There are, of course, a number of things affecting this, such as Rick Nash and Bobby Ryan being available on the trade market; Shea Weber?s week-long, Ross-and-Rachel, will-he-won?t-he courtship with Philadelphia and Nashville (can?t he see they?re perfect for each other!?); Alex Semin?s baffling continued availability, and of course, Shane Doan not really knowing whether he wants to leave Phoenix.

(Coming Up: Saku Koivu at the Olympics; Milan Lucic trade rumors; Jordan Staal > Eric Staal; offer sheets are underutilized; Preds chairman talks big; New Jersey needs to trade a defenseman; How a work stoppage might affect Daniel Alfredsson?s future; Pittsburgh gets all new doctors; Canucks wanted Weber.)

The more strings you pull on this, though, the more it seems everything is contingent on both the Flyers and Doan. If the Flyers do successfully sign Weber to that gigantic offer sheet without Nashville opting to match, then things change a lot, but this is, by definition, something with a very definitive end date. It?s Wednesday. So by then, we will know Weber goes to Philly, and we also know what that means. There will very likely be an arms race in the already-competitive Atlantic Division to add top-end talent, and certainly the Rangers have the greatest stated appetite for doing so, either with Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan.

And at the same time, that will be a very interesting situation for Philadelphia, which has reportedly pursued Doan heavily. People have pointed out that the Weber contract they offered would push the Flyers right up against the cap, necessitating that the team move out someone, probably on the blue line, to give them a little flexibility once again. Unless they do that on a grand scale, that all but prices them out of the Doan hunt despite the rumored silly contract they may or may not have offered him (potentially four years, at a Weber-like price point).

But Doan has been linked with literally like 80 percent of the league at this point, and has already met with the Rangers and Flyers at least, and reportedly has similar arrangements with a number of other teams in the coming days as well. Having the ability to sign him and stay anywhere under the salary cap, therefore, is on the minds of a lot of general managers league-wide, and is holding up everything.

Why, for instance, would you trade a lot of really helpful things that you like about your organization like roster players, prospects, or picks, when you could just sign a perennial 50-plus-point guy and have it cost you nothing but the game checks? A really easy solution that, according to Don Maloney, won?t be resolved any time soon. ?Weeks? is a long time to leave more or less the entire league hanging.

Not that it?s hard to understand Doan?s position: He?s as much stuck between his career-long franchise and other teams as it is between its ownership situation and who-knows-what.

There has been a little bit of speculation that the Coyotes? ownership situation (such as Greg Jamison?s ability to attract investors) is at least somewhat contingent on the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, and perhaps Doan is hoping to glean something from negotiations ? on which he recently sat in ??while trying to seek assurances that the sale will actually go through.

What happens with Weber will inform a lot of decisions, but the second Doan signs, though, all uncertainty is out the window. One team will have its man, and the rest will scramble for help. Alex Semin will sign quickly. That slow market Scott Howson is always bemoaning for Rick Nash will speed up in a hurry. Bobby Ryan will probably get his wish to go elsewhere fulfilled as if by magic.

And when all that happens, we can get on with our lives and start worrying about a work stoppage, like normal sports fans.

What We Learned

Anaheim Ducks: Saku Koivu is one of three Winter Olympic athletes who will carry the torch before things get under way in London. The others are Chinese speed skater Yang Yang and skeleton racer Adam Pengilly, who is from England. Wait a minute. Skeleton racer? Look out Saku!

Boston Bruins: Indeterminate trade rumors involving Milan Lucic started circulating late last week and it doesn?t make much sense. Mediocre playoff performances, I guess? Hey, how are Bobby Ryan and Rick Nash in the playoffs?

Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres are still in for the Shane Doan sweepstakes (along with about 20 other teams, one assumes). Buffalo makes sense on the player?s end, though, because who wouldn?t want to play with Ville Leino?

Calgary Flames: Jay Feaster would still like to make his team a little bit tougher, and become harder to play against. He?d like to acquire a little more grit as a consequence. You know what makes a team tough to play against? Having good players on the roster.

Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes hosted a ?FunFest? for fans and apparently all Jim Rutherford did was talk about how great Jordan Staal is going to be. Meanwhile, Eric was back in Thunder Bay walking around with his hands in his pockets, kicking at rocks.

Chicago Blackhawks: Niklas Hjalmarsson is really happy with how the Blackhawks roster looks right now, which is funny because he might be traded before the season starts.

Getty ImagesColorado Avalanche: Looks like local writers expect Ryan O?Reilly to get a four-year contract worth around $ 16 million. That could be a steal as early as, say, next season.

Columbus Blue Jackets: Buried deep in these musings about how the Shea Weber offer sheet affects the entire NHL free agent and trade market, is the revelation that the team is expected to sign Ryan Murray soon, but might choose to wait for a new collective bargaining agreement instead.

Dallas Stars: Mark Fistric re-upped in Dallas, and for reasonable money. The Stars spent a lot of money on a lot of old guys up front but CapGeek says they have just $ 16.1 million invested in the blue line.

Detroit Red Wings presented by Amway: If the Red Wings strike out on any free agent forwards, they?re willing to start the season with what they have now. Let?s not forget, they wrangled Mikael Samuelsson with a two-year deal so it?s all gonna be fine.

Edmonton Oilers: How good can the Oilers be next year given that they?ve turned over exactly one player on the roster, apart from drafting (and probably playing) Nail Yakupov? Justin Schultz in, Cam Barker out. That?s the only change from a team that finished 29th in the league last season.

Florida Panthers: Really good reason to think Roberto Luongo will get traded to Florida before the start of the season: How likely is it that Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmensen can be as effective (note I didn?t say ?good?) as they were last season?

Los Angeles Kings: Darryl Sutter had his days with the Cup over the weekend and said this: ?In Calgary, we could have won it every year, and I might never get the chance again.? LA?s just lucky he?s not the GM too.

Minnesota Wild: The only news for the Wild of late is that they signed first-round pick Matt Dumba, who will get the standard chance to make the team this fall, then go back to juniors if he doesn?t. Signing two guys to $ 100-plus million contracts tends to limit other offseason options.

Montreal Canadiens: No one has extended an offer sheet to P.K. Subban. Not even any contact with other teams. Just shows how ridiculous most general managers are in not giving out these things. It?s in the CBA. It?s a great way to improve your team while giving up relatively little.

Nashville Predators: Lots of tough talk from Preds chairman Tom Cigarran earlier this summer. ?[W]e?re not going to lose players because of money,? he said. ?The only way we?ll lose them is if there?s some chemistry issue, or their grandmother lives in Montreal or something, the intangibles. But they know we?re competitive, and they know we?re committed after this season, so we?re in a really good place.? This is perhaps not working out so much now.

New Jersey Devils: So Mark Fayne re-signed late Friday night, giving the team eight under-contract defensemen for next season. Gotta think someone gets moved. Someone named Marek Zidlicky.

New York Islanders: John Tavares coached a bantam team in the Allstate Mentorship Cup on Saturday night against Taylor Hall and lost 9-8 in a shootout. His team blew a four-goal third-period lead, including allowing the game-tying goal with 0.7 seconds left. He should never have gone with Rick DiPietro between the pipes.

New York Rangers: The most stunning thing about this New York Daily News report on the Rangers meeting with Shane Doan is the final line. ?Doan?s agent, Terry Bross, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.?

Ottawa Senators: If the start of the NHL season is pushed back, will that prompt Daniel Alfredsson to retire instead of waiting the extra few months? That?s a scary thought.

Philadelphia Flyers: Wow did Larry Brooks ever tear into Ed Snider. Ouch.

Phoenix Coyotes: While all this Shane Doan stuff has gone on, the Coyotes also re-signed potential No. 6 defenseman Chris Summers to his qualifying offer, so this offseason hasn?t been a total wash. No I?m just kidding it will be devastating if Doan signs elsewhere because they have no way to replace him.

Pittsburgh Penguins: The Penguins fired their entire medical staff in a decision that they say had nothing to do with the ongoing issues for Sidney Crosby, presumably while they winked a lot.

San Jose Sharks: Really cool infographic on how the Sharks? 2012-13 roster came together. You, too, can learn how 1992 fifth-rounder Marcus Ragnarasson connects to Logan Couture.

St. Louis Blues: T.J. Oshie was happy to avoid arbitration and get a big, long-term deal because now no one has to tell an arbitrator mean things about him. Oh and also, the money.

Tampa Bay Lightning: B.J. Crombeen says it?s not yet time to start worrying about the CBA. Sounds like pretty reasonable advice. ?We?re trying to break down why they made that proposal and where it?s coming from.? Ooooo. Oooooooooo. Let me guess. It?s because they?re greedy to the point of being unreasonable.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Brian Burke is letting Toronto down by not paying an arm and a leg for Roberto Luongo and Rick Nash, both of whom would have to sign off on going there, and neither of whom seem likely to want to do such a thing. Got it.

Vancouver Canucks: The Canucks thought about giving an offer sheet to Shea Weber but did not do so because they figured Nashville would match. Oh, if only they had frontloaded theirs as absurdly as Philadelphia did.

Washington Capitals: John Carlson recently did some yardwork around a D.C.-area arena and somewhere in Canada, Jake Allen let a bunch of mulch beat him high blocker side.

Winnipeg Jets: Give Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian a pair of 10-year deals? Okay, Winnipeg media!

Minus of the Weekend

Getty ImagesAlso in the Blue Jackets link above, Aaron Portzline says that if they were to trade for Jonathan Bernier, they might have to send back the first-round pick they got from LA in the Jeff Carter deal, in addition to another piece. If that happens, the end result of the two Jeff Carter trades will be Jake Voracek, Sean Couturier, Nick Cousins (88 OHL points last season), and something else, in exchange for 39 games of Jeff Carter at his absolute worst, Jack Johnson and Jonathan Bernier. Asset management. Scott Howson.

Fostering a Blessing: Adoption Update

Denise

Here's where we are in the process...with some corrections and new steps:
  1. Adoption home study interview - Mom
  2. Adoption home study interview - Middle Boy
  3. Adoption home study interview - family
  4. Fingerprints - Mom
  5. Adoption study paperwork - Foster Care Specialist - waiting for the results of my fingerprinting...which by the way has been done SEVEN TIMES in the last two years.
  6. Determine baseline monthly stipend - Service Coordinator/Mom - This will be done at our FTM in June.? I am going to have to figure out how this works.
  7. File stipend collateral paperwork - Service Coordinator
  8. State determine final subsidy payment and schedules subsidy negotiation with foster parent. - We have been in this step since June 6, 2012.? Both service coordinators have tried to get a status update in the last couple of weeks and their emails and calls have gone unanswered.
  9. Select adoption attorney - Mom - I can do this.? I just have to find the paperwork I got from CASA with the recommendations.
  10. Prepare adoption paperwork - Adoption Attorney - He is on vacation this week so hopefully he can wrap up the paperwork
  11. File adoption paperwork at courthouse - Adoption Attorney - Ideally this would get done on June 21, 2012, the first available day it can happen. - This did not happen since the subsidy is not completed.? It will not happen until two weeks after subsidy negotiation is completed and signed and at this time there is no tentative date for the meeting. - This could happen by the end of July.
  12. Wait 30 - 90 days - Everyone? Wait 4 to 8 weeks.? I was wrong about the days.
  13. Adoption hearing - Everyone - There will probably be two of these, because the boys have different judges and are on different court dockets.? The boys really want them to be on the same day, but I don't think we have much control over that.? Ideally they would at least be in the same week.
  14. Big party - Everyone - no details yet, still wondering what this should be.? Younger Boy will want a big party...Middle Boy will want to be a small family celebration, because he doesn't like the attention drawn to him.
The closer we get to adoption the worse behaviors get in our home.? The boys are expecting a magic wand to wave over us at the hearing, but it isn't likely to happen.

Family Home Evening Lesson 1: The Sacrament |

Having been raised in an L-DS family and married to and L-DS woman, and attending and L-DS ward, family home evening is something I?m encouraged to do. I don?t think there is anything wrong with taking one night out of the week and studying the gospel and spending time together as a family.

?
But I feel the same way about Family Home Evening as I do about scripture study. It doesn?t no good to regiment it. By saying you need to read your scriptures once a day relegates it to a chore, a task on a long checklist. Instead we should just be a scripture reading people. Reading scriptures shouldn?t be a task to complete everyday. Rather it should just be who we are. The use, and knowledge, of the scriptures should be a fundamental element of our daily lives.

?
So I feel that relegating activities associated with Family Home Evening to one night a week is counter productive to our ultimate goal. Instead every day we should be involved in gospel discussion and family bonding(treats wouldn?t be that bad either). It should just be part of who we are. Not a weekly event to plan and complete.

?
But anyway, I?ve decided that I will do my best to hold a weekly family home evening. This is mainly for the benefit of my beloved wife. I feel at times that my lack of interest in L-DS Church promoted activities has an affect on her. So I feel that by doing an activity such as Family Home Evening? it will help her and also help me take a more active lead in the spiritual path of my family.

?

So here we go. Lesson one, about the sacrament. My daughter is almost three so these lessons will be VERY simple. So the key notes of the lesson will be in bold. The scriptural backing will be in plain text. Because there will be many people who disagree with what I teach I will back up my statements with the scriptures and words of the Prophets. This lesson should not take more than two minutes to complete. The spirit led me to expound and simplify things as I explained it to my daughter. So just go where you are led and not stick with what is written here.

?

What is the sacrament?

?

The sacrament is a way that baptized members of the church, show our love for Christ. It was a way that we remember him and show our faith in him.

?

Bread

To remember the body of Christ

To witness to Heavenly Father that we are willing to:

- Take upon the name of Jesus

- Always remember Jesus

- Keep the commandments

These things so that we may have the Spirit to be with us.

?

Wine

To remember the blood of Christ which was shed for us.

To witness to Heavenly Father that we do always remember Christ

These things so that we may have the Spirit to be with us.

?

D&C 20:76-79

76 And the elder or priest shall administer it; and after this manner shall he administer it?he shall kneel with the church and call upon the Father in solemn prayer, saying:

?

77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

?

78 The manner of administering the wine?he shall take the cup also, and say:

?

79 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

?

How do we partake of the sacrament:

?

Bread and Wine

Matthew 26:22

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread and brake it, and blessed it, and gave to his disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is in remembrance of my body which I give a ransom for you.

?

Wine

Matthew 26:23, 24

23 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.

24 For this is in remembrance of my blood of the new testament, which is shed for as many as shall believe on my name, for the remission of their sins.

?

D&C 89:5, 6

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

?

D&C 27:2, 3

2 For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory?remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins.

3 Wherefore, a commandment I give unto you, that you shall not purchase wine neither strong drink of your enemies;

?

Elders or Priests Bless the sacrament

?

D&C 20:38, 40, 46, 50

38 The duty of the elders, priests, teachers, deacons, and members of the church of Christ?An apostle is an elder, and it is his calling to baptize;

40 And to administer bread and wine?the emblems of the flesh and blood of Christ?

46 The priest?s duty is to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize, and administer the sacrament,

50 But when there is an elder present, he is only to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize,

?

Kneel when the sacrament is being blessed

?

Moroni 4:2

2 And they did kneel down with the church, and pray to the Father in the name of Christ, saying?

?

D&C 20:76

76 And the elder or priest shall administer it; and after this manner shall he administer it?he shall kneel with the church and call upon the Father in solemn prayer, saying?

?

Only those who are baptized should eat of the sacrament

?

3 Ne. 18: 28, 29

28 And now behold, this is the commandment which I give unto you, that ye shall not suffer any one knowingly to partake of my flesh and blood unworthily, when ye shall minister it;

29 For whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and blood unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul; therefore if ye know that a man is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him.

?

Eat until Filled

?

3 Nephi 18: 4, 5

4 And when they had eaten and were filled, he commanded that they should give unto the multitude.

5 And when the multitude had eaten and were filled, he said unto the disciples: Behold there shall one be ordained among you, and to him will I give power that he shall break bread and bless it and give it unto the people of my church, unto all those who shall believe and be baptized in my name.

I also printed out two pictures as visual aids.

?

?

?
I did not use a picture of Christ because I believe that falls under the making of graven images. For me when I see an image or painting of Christ it draws me away from actually coming to know Christ because an artist has already depicted Him for me. I would rather have my own image of Christ in my mind and heart rather than imagining an artists depiction of Him.

?

Finally here?s an inetersting write up I found while doing research. It comes from here: http://truthseeker.tripod.com/LDSQUESTION11.html

?

How did we overlook that we should all kneel as the sacrament is being blessed?

Consider:
Moroni 4:2 And they did kneel down with the church, and pray to the Father in the name of Christ, saying?

D&C 20:76 And the elder or priest shall administer it; and after this manner shall he administer it?he shall kneel with the church and call upon the Father in solemn prayer, saying?

Note that in both scriptures it says that the person blessing the sacrament will kneel WITH the church and not FOR the church or IN FRONT OF the church. No, WITH the church, that is to say WITH the members which together are the church.

This very issue was discussed in the 1890?s and was dismissed by Joseph F. Smith as being ?rather impracticable?:

?I want to speak of one or two little things that have been brought to my mind here and at other places, which may be profitable to some of us. I would like to call the attention of the congregation, especially of the Bishops, to the mode of administering the sacrament. The book of Doctrine and Covenants teaches us that the Elder or Priest who administers the sacrament ?shall kneel with the Church.? Of course, it is quite difficult, and probably inappropriate, for a whole congregation to kneel while the blessing is being asked upon the bread and upon the water. The confusion and noise incident to kneeling and rising again would be inappropriate. Besides, the construction of our meeting houses, and the size of the congregations generally, would make that practice rather impracticable.? (Collected Discourses, Vol. 3, Joseph F. Smith, July 16, 1893)

Difficult? Probably inappropriate? Confusion and noise? Construction of our meeting houses? Size of congregations? Impracticable? Sounds a lot more like excuses rather than revelation to me.

Our meeting houses could have been built to accommodate the word of God! Catholics stand and kneel as a congregation during Mass without noise or confusion. I believe we were supposed to kneel during the sacramental prayers but this point has been over looked and is now lost.

How Important Is It To Have A Close ... - Get Paid to Write Online

Last week, my post?touched on the topic of familiarity, explaining that when a writer contacts me, I generally prefer them be relatively social. ?I don?t want them to be telling me all about their life story and I don?t want to see an e-mail scattered with ?text speak? or general typos, but I want to feel as though the writer is talking to me personally.

A group of computer generated people standing in a circle

Should an editor-writer relationship stay formal and continually professional or can you see more benefits by becoming friends?

One of the reasons I like this approach is it builds an instant relationship between the two of us. ?It may not be a great, in-depth relationship, but it?s one that puts both of us at ease in what could be a particularly formal situation. ?For example, everyone feels comfortable greeting someone by name and so as soon as you?ve got past that first e-mail or telephone call, knowing you can call someone by their first name in a laid back way in future removes some of the potential worry or concern that many people often have.

But?as a writer, how far should you go to build upon this relationship? ?Should you stay at arms length to your editors (and we?re not just talking magazine editors here ? it could be anyone who you submit work to, whether that?s another writer or a business owner) or should you try to develop your relationship further?

Personally, I?m in the latter boat and strongly believe that generally speaking, a close working relationship can help to develop your career substantially, both instantly and continually and it can make the whole writing process a lot more hassle-free.

Take my relationship with Sharon, the owner of this blog, as an example. ?I?ve been writing here for almost two years now and we?ve known each other a little longer, almost purely through commenting on writing discussions.

A few weeks ago, we had a chat and the outcome was we?re going to share the mid-week writing responsibilities between the two of us, rather than me simply provide the blog post every week. ?If we didn?t know each other well, it could have resulted in the discussion turning a bit sour for either party, but it wasn?t ? Sharon talked about a few different options, I talked about a few different options and we came to a decision that suited both of us within a matter of minutes. ?It was easy.

The benefits can be seen outside of your standard working agreement with the editor, too.

Looking at my relationship with Sharon once more, a few months ago she approached me asking if I could take on some work at the last minute. ?It was just a quick e-mail. ?Sharon knew I could deliver the work to the standard she needed and was confident that I could meet the deadline. ?I accepted the work and delivered it by the time she needed it. ?The client then had a few questions, I made the edits and sent them back ? and this resulted in more work from the same client the next month and the month after that, too.

I?m not saying this approach is perfect, however and it does have its downfalls, with one of the most common in my view being your writing rates, particularly in terms of increases.

When you become friends with an editor, you want to continue to deliver the best work you can for them, but you also want to be receiving the right pay for the job. ?From the editor?s point of view, they want to be getting the best work they can whilst paying as little as they have to. ?This isn?t two parties trying to get the better of each other financially, it?s just standard business sense ? buyers want to pay less and sellers want to receive more.

In this position, you?ll no doubt work at a happy medium for weeks, months or even years, but there?ll come a time when as a writer, you?ll want to ask for an increase.

Working with an editor who you don?t have such a close relationship with, asking for a rise isn?t overly difficult. ?Yes, it can still leave you with that feeling that they may turn you down and take their work elsewhere, but you don?t feel overly concerned about their personal feelings ? if they say no, they say no.

With an editor who?s a friend, if you ask for an increase to your rates, what if you offend them? ?What if you put them in an awkward position? ?What if they want to give you a rise, but they can?t financially?

Given the option, I?d always run with trying to develop close working relationships with any editor and take the negative aspects in my stride, because for me, there are more positives that negatives.

But what about you? ?Looking at some of the comments on my post from last week, I was surprised at how many people generally look to formality rather than a more conversational approach to the type of communication I was talking about and so I wouldn?t be surprised if I was in the minority here!
