Bright X-ray flashes created in laser lab

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? A breakthrough in laser science was achieved in Vienna: In the labs of the Photonics Institute at the Vienna University of Technology, a new method of producing bright laser pulses at x-ray energies was developed. The radiation covers a broad energy spectrum and can therefore be used for a wide range of applications, from materials science to medicine. Up until now, similar kinds of radiation could only be produced in particle accelerators (synchrotrons), but now a laser laboratory can also achieve this.

The new laser technology was presented in the current issue of the magazine Science.

Laser Light: Photons Oscillating in Sync

In a laser beam, all the photons oscillate in perfect unison. The wave crests are aligned -- this kind of radiation is called "coherent." The coherent light created in the labs of Professor Andrius Baltuska's team (Photonics Institute, TU Vienna) has very special properties: It is composed from photons of very different energies -- extending to x-ray radiation with very short wavelengths and high energy.

Infrared Light Makes Atoms Emit X-Rays

The energy for this kind of radiation is supplied by short infrared laser pulses. They are fired at noble gas, where they rip electrons out of the atoms. These electrons are then accelerated by the infrared light and return to their atoms, where they convert their kinetic energy into x-ray radiation. That way, long-wave infrared photons are converted into short-wave x-ray photons. When the atoms in the gas container all do this dance with their electrons in the right rhythm and all the x-ray-waves add up perfectly, a beam of laser-like x-rays is created. Research groups from several universities were involved in this experiment: Vienna University of Technology, University of Colorado, Columbia University and the University of Salamanca.

5000 Photons Combined to One Single Photon

The idea of combining several photons to a single photon with higher energy is not new: In 1961, two photons from a red ruby laser were combined to one blue photon. The new experiment however combines more than 5000 photons of low energy to one high-energy x-ray photon.

The infrared photons have a rather low energy -- but for the experiment, a large number of them is needed. That is why the infrared source has to be very strong. A unique infrared laser was used, specially developed at the Vienna University of Technology, with a peak power of 100 gigawatts. This corresponds to the power of several hundred hydroelectric power plants -- but only during the short laser pulse, which lasts for femtoseconds (10^-15 seconds). The team from the University of Colorado contributed know-now on the creation of x-rays in noble gas at high pressure. The theory groups from Cornell and Salamanca studied the phenomenon using numerical calculations.

Working with Invisible Radiation

"Together we discussed how to combine the technological know how of our research teams, and finally we chose the most challenging path," says Audrius Pugzlys (TU Vienna). The team decided to use infrared radiation with a very long wavelength of four micrometers. This kind of radiation is invisible to the human eye and it is hard to trace even with technological tools. This makes the experiments very challenging, but it allows for higher x-ray energies. The effort finally paid off: "Our coherent x-ray radiation opens the door to very precise spectroscopy, which can be used to research new materials, to advance electronics or to analyze biomolecules," says Audrius Pugzlys.

Laser Labs Instead of Particle Accelerators

This kind of radiation used to be available only in expensive particle accelerators (synchrotrons). The new table top x-ray light source, however, can be assembled in a small laser lab. "Synchrotrons still deliver more photons per second than our beam does, but for many applications, our light source will be very useful," says Audrius Pugzlys. The hard x-ray regime of photons with extremely high energy cannot yet be reached, but the energy of the photons in the x-ray beam is much higher than in any other light-powered tabletop device. Now the team is trying to reduce the time interval between the laser pulses. This should drastically increase the average intensity of the beam.

Virgin male moths think they're hot when they're not

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? Talk about throwing yourself into a relationship too soon. A University of Utah study found that when a virgin male moth gets a whiff of female sex attractant, he's quicker to start shivering to warm up his flight muscles, and then takes off prematurely when he's still too cool for powerful flight. So his headlong rush to reach the female first may cost him the race.

The study illustrates the tradeoff between being quick to start flying after a female versus adequately warming up the flight muscles before starting the chase. Until the next study, it remains a mystery which moths actually reach the females: the too-cool, quick-takeoff males or the males who wait until they're hot enough to take a shot. The latter may end up flying faster and more efficiently and win the race, despite a slow takeoff.

"What happens before flight has not been well studied," says Jos? Crespo, a University of Utah doctoral student in biology and first author of the new study, published online June 7 in the Journal of Experimental Biology. "To me, the story is you have a behavior -- pre-flight warmup -- that is switched on by smell."

Senior author Neil Vickers, professor and chairman of biology at the University of Utah, says: "In many insects, moths in particular, all of their adult lives are affected by odor -- all the activities they engage in that you and I see at night at the porch light are things typically affected by odor."

Moths forage for nectars using flower odors. Males follow female sex attractants or pheromones to find the females. Then they have what Vickers calls "an odor dialogue" and mate. The females use odor to lay their eggs on the right plants.

"Finding out how odors switch on behavior is critical to the whole picture," Vickers says. "Furthermore, because insects have this amazing ability to fly, which not many animals have, finding out how flight is turned on by odor is an issue relevant to many insects. ? There is a whole constellation of behaviors driven by odor, and this is true of all manner of insects" and even other animals and people.

Vickers and Crespo conducted the study with University of Utah biology Professor Franz Goller. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health.

Watching Chilled Moths Heat Up

The study involved a moth named Helicoverpa zea, commonly known as the corn ear worm. It belongs to the largest family of moths and butterflies -- noctuids -- which have more than 35,000 species worldwide, including the medium-sized moths many of us see in or near our homes.

"It's a significant agricultural pest which attacks many different crops -- corn, soy, tomato, strawberries," Vickers says. Researchers use them because they are good models to show how odors are processed in the brain.

Virgin males were used in the study because it is standard protocol to use animals that haven't previously mated or been exposed to pheromones.

To start the experiments, all the moths were chilled down to 46 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, cool enough so they stay inactive, and so handling them before the experiments doesn't prompt them to start warming up immediately.

The first experiments were conducted using a small, open roofed, cardboard wind tunnel about 11 inches long, 5.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall. A 1.2-inch tall, 1.2-inch diameter cylindrical wire cage, with no top, was placed upright inside one end of the wind tunnel, with an inactive moth at the bottom.

A fan blew a gentle, 1 mph breeze toward the moth, and one of six odors was released near the upwind end of the tube. One was the moth's normal pheromone blend, one was the blend's primary component, and the other four were odors (or in one case, no odor) that scientists believed wouldn't attract the moths (and didn't).

An infrared video camera -- which measures temperatures -- recorded the moths as they began their shivering warm-up and finally took off. The moths are seen in infrared turning from cooler purple-blue to warmer orange and even warmer red and yellow.

By analyzing the video after each of dozens of experiments, Crespo measured how long it took inactive moths to start shivering after smelling the odor, and how long they spent shivering until takeoff. The infrared video, one frame before takeoff, showed the temperature of the moth's thorax at takeoff (the wings and all related muscles are in the insect's thorax, the body section between the head and abdomen). Crespo also calculated the rate at which the moths warmed up.

Moths that did not smell pheromone flew in random directions when they finally warmed up. Moths that smelled the pheromone blend (and often the primary component alone) started shivering faster, took off sooner (less time shivering), did so at a lower temperature than other moths, and flew toward the odor.

Quicker Takeoff, Less Powerful Flight

Until now, researchers thought the moths simply warmed up as fast as they can. "These guys don't all heat up at the same rate," Vickers says. "The guys exposed to the pheromone odor, go 'Wow!' and they warm up faster and take off more quickly. And that compromises the flight power they can produce."

Crespo conducted a second set of experiments that showed cooler temperatures mean less vertical flight power or force.

In these experiments, wax was used to gently attach (not stick) an entomological pin to a moth's thorax. The other end of the pin was attached to a force sensor, which in turn was wired to various electronics to read the results. A small Styrofoam ball was placed under the moth, which reflexively grabbed onto it with its legs. When Crespo gently pulled away the ball, the moth reflexively tried to fly upward, and the force of that effort was recorded. White and black lights -- to which moths are attracted -- were above the apparatus to induce the moths to fly with maximum force.

The test was repeated in small temperature increments, showing how warm a moth thorax must be for maximum flight power -- about 90 degrees Fahrenheit -- and that those in the study took off too cool at about 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Crespo says moths "are well-known for 'scramble competition.' When the female is advertising the pheromone in a field, that pheromone is probably going to be detected by several males, and they're going to try to compete and get to the female first. You can see how it might be advantageous to take off sooner and try to get to the female first."

"However," he adds, "if you take off with a lower temperature, we show you have less maximum power in flight, so we think there is a compromise between heating up faster to a lower temperature to arrive at that female first, or waiting a little longer to heat up to a higher temperature and make sure you're going to make it to the female."

"This is about a decision to get up and go: 'This is the right smell. Let's do it,'" Vickers says. "There are neurons that detect the odor, and they feed that information into the brain, and the brain says, 'This is the right odor, this is a female,' and then processes occur that we don't know much about. But the brain sends instructions to the flight muscles to start warming up. The animal responds to this odor by warming itself at a faster rate than if it's exposed to a non-female odor. At some level, we've moved a little step closer to understanding that black box that's evaluating these inputs and internal conditions and deciding to move."

Vickers adds: "Insect flight muscles are among the most metabolically costly in the animal kingdom. In order to fly, you have to use a lot of oxygen and generate the power. The decision to take flight after a female odor is not one that would be taken lightly by the moth because it's expensive."

"It's costly to fly, to jump into a relationship," he says.

FTC tells ITC that bans over standards-based patents aren't kosher, looks warily at Motorola and Samsung

Motorola Droid RAZR and Apple iPhone 4

Most of the scrutiny over abuse of standards-based patents has come through European Union investigations of Motorola and Samsung. That attention might come to the US if the Federal Trade Commission has its way. It just sent a letter to the International Trade Commission arguing that companies should be blocked from landing bans if they base their disputes on standards. These kinds of blockades "deter innovation" and spur companies to try for much more of a cash windfall from a patent than it's really worth, the FTC argues. The letter doesn't directly accuse anyone of getting their fingers dirty, but there's little doubt that it's referring to Motorola (now part of Google) and Samsung: their varying ITC disputes against Apple and Microsoft are often based around standards patents for technologies like 3G and H.264 video, which aren't supposed to demand legal action except as a last resort. An angry FTC missive doesn't constitute a formal investigation that would actively worry either Motorola or Samsung, but it certainly fires a warning shot across the bow.

(AP Photo/Andy Wong, File)

(AP) ? China told foreign embassies Tuesday to stop publishing their own reports on air quality in the country, escalating its objections to a popular U.S. Embassy Twitter feed that tracks pollution in smoggy Beijing.

Only the Chinese government is authorized to monitor and publish air quality information and data from other sources may not be standardized or rigorous, Wu Xiaoqing, a vice environmental minister, told reporters.

China has long taken issue with the U.S. Embassy's postings of hourly readings of Beijing's air quality on a Twitter feed with more than 19,000 followers since 2008. But its past objections were raised quietly. U.S. consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou also post readings of the cities' air quality on Twitter.

The Twitter feeds were operating normally Tuesday, and an embassy spokesman in Beijing said the air quality reports were meant to inform Americans living in the three Chinese cities.

The air quality readings in Beijing are based on a single monitoring station within embassy grounds, and pollution levels are rated according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standard that is more stringent than the one used by the Chinese government.

For instance, the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday reported 47 micrograms of fine particulate matter ? particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in size, or about 1/30th the width of an average human hair ? in the air and said the level was "unhealthy for sensitive groups." Readings from Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau's 27 monitoring stations ranged between 51 to 79 micrograms but categorized all those levels as "good."

The Beijing government only began reporting PM2.5 earlier this year after long-standing public and international criticism of its lack of transparency about its air quality.

The government appears frustrated that there are now dueling readings for air quality and that the U.S. readings underscore the fact that pollution levels considered unhealthy in the U.S. are classified as good by China.

Wu said it isn't fair to judge Chinese air by American standards because China is a developing country and noted that U.S. environmental guidelines have become more stringent over time.

The standard China uses "takes into account the level of our current stage of development," Wu said.

Wu also said that air quality monitoring by foreign diplomats was inconsistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and urged diplomats to abide by China's laws and regulations.

It is unclear if other nations monitor and publicize their readings of air quality in Chinese cities, but local Chinese have used the U.S. readings to prod their government into publishing more detailed pollution data.

Later, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin echoed Wu's remarks, saying at a regular press briefing that China objected to the publicity rather than the gathering of the environmental data.

"Of course, if the foreign embassies want to collect air quality information for their own staff or diplomats, I think that is their own matter, but we believe that this type of information should not released to the public," Liu said.

The top environmental official in Shanghai over the weekend also spoke out on the issue, telling local media that an air quality feed launched last month by the U.S. consulate in Shanghai was illegal.

The U.S. Embassy said the air quality monitor in Shanghai measures the air quality in the area around the consulate's office. "The monitor is an unofficial resource for the health of the consulate community," said Richard Buangan, embassy spokesman in Beijing.

China requires concentrations of PM2.5 to be kept below daily averages of 75 micrograms per cubic meter ? more than twice as lenient as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standard of 35 micrograms.

PM2.5 are believed to be a health risk because they can lodge deeply in the lungs, and have been linked to increased cardiovascular and respiratory diseases as well as lung cancer.

Scientists warn geoengineering may disrupt rainfall

LONDON | Wed Jun 6, 2012 9:38am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Large-scale engineering projects aimed at fighting global warming could radically reduce rainfall in Europe and North America, a team of scientists from four European countries have warned.

Geoengineering projects are controversial, even though they are largely theoretical at this point. They range from mimicking the effects of large volcanic eruptions by releasing sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, to deploying giant mirrors in space to deflect the sun's rays.

Proponents say they could be a rapid response to rising global temperatures but environmentalists argue they are a distraction from the need to reduce man-made carbon emissions.

Critics also point to a lack of solid research into unintended consequences and the absence of any international governance structure for such projects, whose effects could transcend national borders.

A small geoengineering experiment in the UK was recently abandoned due to a dispute over attempts by some of the team involved to patent the technology.

In this new study scientists from Germany, Norway, France and the UK used four different computer models that mimic the earth's climate to see how they responded to increased levels of carbon dioxide coupled with reduced radiation from the sun.

Their scenario assumed a world with four times the carbon dioxide concentration of the preindustrial world, which lead author Hauke Schmidt says is at the upper end, but in the range of what is considered possible at the end of this century.

They found that global rainfall was reduced by about 5 percent on average using all four models.

"Climate engineering cannot be seen as a substitute for a policy pathway of mitigating climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions," they said in the study, published in Earth System Dynamics, an open access journal of the European Geosciences Union.

Under the scenario studied, rainfall diminished by about 15 percent, or about 100 millimeters per year, compared to pre-industrial levels, in large areas of North America and northern Eurasia.

Over central South America, all the models showed a decrease in rainfall that reached more than 20 percent in parts of the Amazon region.

Crowds cheer queen on last day of Jubilee

LONDON (AP) ? Crowds cheering "God save the queen!" and pealing church bells greeted Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday as she arrived for a service at St. Paul's Cathedral on the last of four days of celebrations of her 60 years on the throne.

Poignantly, the queen was without Prince Philip, her husband of 64 years, who was hospitalized on Monday for treatment of a bladder infection.

During the service, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, praised the queen for bringing happiness to the nation. His thoughts were seconded by jubilant crowds that cheered royals major and minor as they made their way to the service of thanksgiving.

"We are marking six decades of living proof that public service is possible and that it is a place where happiness can be found," Williams told the royals and dignitaries filling the vast landmark church designed by Christopher Wren in the 17th century.

"This year has already seen a variety of Jubilee creations and projects. But its most lasting memorial would be the rebirth of an energetic, generous spirit of dedication to the common good and the public service, the rebirth of a recognition that we live less than human lives if we think just of our own individual good," Williams added.

The queen will close the Diamond Jubilee celebrations with a rare address to the nation.

The broadcast at 1700 GMT (1 p.m. EDT) in Britain and throughout the Commonwealth follows the service, a lunch in a medieval hall and a carriage procession back to Buckingham Palace where the queen and her family could greet well-wishers from a balcony.

The two-minute address, recorded on Monday, will also be available on the Royal Channel on YouTube, the palace said. Other than the annual Christmas Day broadcasts, the 86-year-old monarch has rarely spoken directly to the nation.

Williams paid tribute to the queen for her service to the nation and Commonwealth. It was not a role she chose, but one thrust upon her when her uncle David, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936. The queen's father became king and Elizabeth, the elder daughter, was destined to reign.

Within the constraints of a constitutional monarchy, the queen's life has been one of ceremonial duty, world travel and the pleasures of great wealth. She has also been the mother of family that has produced turbulent marriages and traumatic divorces.

"Dedication to the service of a community certainly involves that biblical sense of an absolute purge of selfish goals, but it is also the opening of a door into shared riches," Williams said.

"I don't think it's at all fanciful to say that, in all her public engagements, our queen has shown a quality of joy in the happiness of others; she has responded with just the generosity St. Paul speaks of in showing honor to countless local communities and individuals of every background and class and race," Williams said.

"She has made her public happy and all the signs are that she is herself happy, fulfilled and at home in these encounters."

With most of Tuesday's events indoors or under cover, there was less worry about the precarious weather, which has ranged from unseasonably cool to downright foul, as rain poured during Sunday's grand procession of boats down the Thames.

Among the early arrivals at the cathedral were four women from Jedburgh, a Scottish town near the English border, who displayed a large Union Jack flag.

"We've been saving for three years to come here," said Marion Kingswood, 69. "Apart from the royal wedding, there's been nothing like it. Sixty years is such an achievement."

Barry Dandy, 71, and his wife flew in from Sydney, Australia, to join in the celebrations.

"They showed a preview of the River Pageant on Australian television and my wife said, 'I'd love to be there,'" Dandy said. "It's been great to take part in the celebrations."

The Very Rev. David Ison, the dean of St. Paul's, said Philip would be remembered in the prayers.

"We were already going to say prayers for the Duke of Edinburgh and it will have an added poignancy as we hope he will make a swift recovery," Ison said.

A few anti-monarchist demonstrators were outside the cathedral with slogans including "Republic Now!" or, in a shot at the cost of maintaining the monarchy, "9500 Nurses or 1 Queen?"

Royalists in the crowd responded noisily, chanting "God save the queen!"

Along the parade route, 70-year-old Margaret Barker said Philip's absence would put a damper on the queen's day.

"She's got the rest of her family around her but when you think of all the planning there's been for this and how long they've been together, it seems very sad that he can't be with her today," Barker said.

Tourist Cassandra Past, 20, from New York, said she expected the queen to keep her chin up despite worries about her 90-year-old husband. "She is the queen, and she sort of has to put on a good face for her country and her people," Past said.

ASB Wins Inagural Canstar New Zealand Online Banking... | Stuff.co ...

ASB has been recognised as the country's top online bank in Canstar's inaugural annual online banking award.

Banks were assessed on how they used technology to provide the functionality customers valued most including security, information and tools to keep them informed about financial products on offer.

Canstar New Zealand national manager Derek Bonnar said it was not simply looking at the transactional capability, but how much of someone's banking could be managed online.

"Institutions that scored well here interact with customers through internet banking, whether that's through personal messaging, stripped down or prepopulated applications for existing customers, or allowing customers to manage their banking relationships online.''

In 2010 ASB launched a service called Virtual Branch where users could chat through Facebook to bank staff, setting up automatic payments and direct debits through the social networking site as well as getting advice on products.

This year it launched ASB Triple Check adding three extra security questions from the bank when people buy online through independent websites that use 'Verified by Visa' or 'MasterCard SecureCode'.

Canstar said ASB was also ''paving a new era of online banking'' with its iPhone and Android mobile phone apps and budgeting software Track my Spending, an online tool for internet banking customers to categorise their purchases.

It made special mention of ASB's mobile banking app, which recently passed 100,000 downloads.

ASB's general manager brand experience and digital channels, Anna Curzon said listening to customers and responding by developing the technology and services they wanted was a hallmark of ASB.
"We're proud of the online and mobile banking experiences we've created and our customers seem to agree in terms of the feedback we continue to receive and the support they have shown with more than 25,000 upgrading to the new ASB Mobile app in the past 10 days alone," she said.
The app was recently upgraded to let customer to make payments from smartphones using mobile phone numbers and email addresses instead of a bank account number.??? ?
Kiwibank got a nod for its online banking relationships by using a personalised online relationship manager for each customer. The manager wishes the customer happy birthday on behalf of the bank, can review customers' accounts and gives them specialist advice through mobile and internet banking.

''With the success of these developments, the only way is forward for new innovations to continue closing the gap between customers and their bank,'' Bonnar said.

Canstar analysed how easy the process was to make applications for credit cards, personal loans, mortgages and deposit accounts online, how quick feedback was provided and if online help was available in methods like email or Skype.

With mobile banking, it looked at the availability of transactions and other functions and how compatible the service was with phones.

Canstar also assessed the public websites of the banks for their transparency in providing product information and how intuitive the layout of the websites were.

It looked at the tools it offered online such as 'What will my repayments be?' and 'How much could I borrow?' mortgage calculators and other budgeting online. For web 2.0 interaction, Canstar assessed if banks had active Twitter and Facebook accounts, forums and public feedback areas.

Eagle Ford banks challenged as deposits skyrocket

South Texas landowners getting fat checks from oil companies for drilling on their land have been a boon to banks based in the Eagle Ford Shale.

Deposits at most of those banks have surged. The Karnes County National Bank's deposits rocketed 110 percent to almost $168 million from the end of 2009 through the first quarter of this year.

Eleven other institutions registered jumps in deposits that ranged from 46.8 percent to 82.7 percent. By comparison, domestic deposits at U.S. banks increased 14.7 percent during the same period.

But the influx of deposits has left the Eagle Ford-area banks with something of a challenge: how to deploy that money at a time when loan demand isn't nearly as strong.

?It's a problem, but it's a good problem,? said H.B. ?Trip? Ruckman III, president and chairman of The Karnes County National Bank in Karnes City. Its deposits rose by $88 million from the end of 2009 to March 31, while its loans rose by $19 million.

?We have had depositors come in with more than a million dollars at a whack,? he added. ?So it is a challenge to keep the money invested.?

The San Antonio Express-News tracked deposits and loans from the end of 2009, when activity started picking up in the Eagle Ford Shale, through the first quarter of this year at 20 banks based in the 14 counties directly affected by the oil and gas activity. Most of the banks tracked are small community banks with assets of less than $220 million.

Eighteen of the 20 banks had deposit growth above the national average of 14.7 percent over the 27 months ending March 31.

Deposits at Security State Bank in Pearsall, for example, climbed by $150 million from 2009 through March 31, mostly as a result of the oil and gas activity, said Mike Wilson, president and CEO.

?Where we used to hunt for money, we don't have to hunt anymore,? he said.

Curtis Carpenter, who follows banks as managing director of Sheshunoff & Co. Investment Banking in Austin, likened the situation to having ?more than you can say grace over.?

Still, the deposit windfall has yet to translate to the same growth in loans.

?You can only loan money where it makes sense,? Carpenter said. ?And the fact that all of these deposits are coming in doesn't necessarily translate into lending opportunities.?

Those lending opportunities will pick up as the Eagle Ford area prospers from all the oil and gas activity, Carpenter said. Bankers agreed, saying they are eager to loan on both multifamily and single-family residential projects. There is some reticence to loan on RV parks and motels because of concerns that they've saturated the area.

Bankers offered other reasons why loan growth hasn't corresponded with deposit growth. Banks have to comply with lending standards ? set by banking regulators ? that are designed to prevent bank failures. Many existing bank customers are paying off loans with their newfound wealth rather than borrowing money. In addition, many of the oil services companies operating in the Eagle Ford Shale have pre-existing relationships with banks outside the area, so they are not turning to South Texas banks for loans.

Lagging loan growth

All but six of the 20 banks studied reported loan growth over the period. That growth ranged from as little as 6.5 percent at Texas Community Bank in Laredo to 62.2 percent at The Karnes County National Bank.

The increase for those 14 banks was well above the 1.8 percent increase for all U.S. banks combined. Nevertheless, the pace of growth significantly lagged the rise in deposit growth that Eagle Ford-area banks experienced.

?Nobody's been able to keep up with that,? said Fred Hilscher, executive vice president of the First National Bank of Shiner. Its deposits are up $78 million, or 78.5 percent, versus $7.7 million for loans. The bank borders two counties directly affected by the Eagle Ford Shale. He attributed most of the increase in deposits to the shale.

?We would hope that we could have a larger loan growth, more investments, but ... we're very conservative in what we do,? he added.

Security State Bank's lending is up about $46 million, or 29 percent since the end of 2009, though its deposits were up $150 million. Wilson, the bank's president and CEO, has been assessing loans for new oil field buildings and yards in the area to ensure that the bank doesn't concentrate too heavily on these types of investments.

?If this oil play was to quit or really slow down, there's going to be an oversupply of that type of thing,? he said. ?Just like RV parks and motels. The whole Eagle Ford Shale, every major community in it, is inundated with motels.?

Every week, the bank turns down at least one loan application for motel construction, Wilson said. He'd prefer to provide construction financing for apartments or duplexes because there is such a shortage of permanent housing in the area, but developers aren't interested.

?Everybody wants the immediate huge payback,? he said.

At Dilley State Bank, with nearly $100 million in assets, deposits increased by $33 million, or 70 percent, to $80.4 million. Loans, meanwhile, increased $3.4 million, or 36.2 percent, to almost $12.8 million.

?Our loans are higher now,? said Jeff W. Avant, the bank's president and CEO. ?But they are still relatively low (versus assets) for most banks our size. It's not that we're not (looking to lend) ? we're looking. We look at all the loans and possible loans that come in.?

Like most other banks, Dilley State Bank isn't willing to ease its lending standards to make a loan. And while oil services companies have come into the area, the bank hasn't had a bump in lending to them.

?A lot of oil companies, they are banking wherever they come from,? Avant said.

Straining capital ratios

The flood of deposits has led to one serious issue for some of these small banks: having enough capital.

Banking regulators require that banks maintain a minimal level of capital. Deposits are listed on a bank's balance sheet as liabilities, so as deposits swell, the institutions' owners might have to put up more of their own money ? capital ? as a hedge against potential losses to satisfy regulators' requirements.

It's an issue banks will have to grapple with as long as landowners continue to deposit big checks from royalties and leases. The solution is either to turn away customers or to raise more capital, Sheshunoff's Carpenter said. Selling stock or retaining earnings are ways to boost capital.

Security State Bank has chosen the latter. The bank has been retaining about half its profits ? rather than paying them out to shareholders ? to increase its capital so its capital ratios remain stable.

Meanwhile, The Karnes County National Bank is seeking authority from federal banking regulators to sell $5 million in stock to boost its capital, Ruckman said.

?You've got to be proactive in these situations, and that's what we're trying to do,? he said.

Picky about customers

Dilley State Bank hasn't gone to the extreme of turning away new customers to limit new deposits, but it's particular about who it wants banking there.

?We're not trying to grow deposits. We're not short on cash,? president and CEO Avant said.

One of Avant's lieutenants refused to share the bank's CD rates with a reporter out of fear that it they were published it would generate a slew of phone calls from prospective customers wanting to park their money there for just a short time.

?We are looking for long-term-relation-type customers,? Avant said.

All the activity in the Eagle Ford Shale has created exciting times, Security State Bank's Wilson said. Yet he can't quit worrying that it won't last as long as many predict.

?Everything tells us that this is going to be a long-term play, but we've all been through some of these before and nobody saw the end coming until the day after it happened,? he said.

Carter scores in OT, Kings win 2-1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? The Los Angeles Kings are headed back to Hollywood, and the Stanley Cup is so close they don't even want to think about it.

Jeff Carter scored at 13:42 in overtime and the Kings moved within two wins of their first NHL title with a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of the finals on Saturday night.

"I think we have to reset, refocus," said Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, who scored one of the goals of the entire postseason with an end-to-end rush. "We have to go back to L.A. as if the series is just starting. We have home-ice advantage and have to take the first two at home.

"We're happy that we got the first two. But going home on the plane tonight, we're trying to forget about those games. We're going to learn what we did right and wrong. But going back home, it's a whole new series."

Not really. Two more wins by Los Angeles and the NHL season is over.

The Devils face the daunting task of trying to win four of five against a team that is 14-2 in the postseason.

"They are a great team, but it's not like we got blown out the last two games," Devils captain Zach Parise said. "It will be really hard but we will give it our best shot."

The Devils played well in Game 2. But just like in Game 1, the Kings were a little better as Jonathan Quick made 32 saves to help Los Angeles earn its 10th consecutive road win this postseason, and its 12th in a row over the last two seasons. Both are NHL records.

"Yeah, it's tough." Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "But, you know, you can't feel sorry for yourself. We played a much better game. I knew we would respond. We did it the right way. You know, came up one goal short."

Meanwhile, L.A. is beginning to dream about a championship finish to its amazing postseason run.

"I think you obviously think about that," Kings forward Dustin Penner said of the title. "Like now, we may get a little nostalgic and think, you know, two more wins and we make history. When it comes to Monday and Wednesday night, we won't be thinking that way. We'll be just thinking that game, that shift, that period, the next goal. That's how we've done it all playoffs."

New Jersey had won eight of 10 games in beating the Flyers and Rangers in the last two rounds in the Eastern Conference. Now the Devils are in desperate need of a victory in Game 3 at the Staples Center on Monday night.

"I thought we played well today," goaltender Martin Brodeur said. "We have to play better because we didn't win."

This marked the first time in 61 years that Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup finals were decided in overtime. The last occasion was the epic 1951 Stanley Cup matchup, where all five games between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens went to extra time. The Maple Leafs captured the Cup.

Carter ended this one with a great individual effort after the Kings outshot New Jersey 11-3 in OT, and only Brodeur kept the Devils in the game.

"It's a pretty special moment, " said Carter, who was acquired from Columbus midseason. "I think, obviously, any time you get a chance to play in the final, it's exciting. But scoring an overtime goal Game 2, puts you up 2-0, it's pretty special."

One of a handful of former Philadelphia Flyers playing for the Kings, Carter corralled a rebound from behind the net, preventing the Devils from grabbing a much-needed line change. He rolled around into the slot, from Brodeur's right-hand side, and let a wrist shot off that beat the standout goaltender along the ice on his stick side with Penner in front of the net as a screen, left unguarded.

"I wasn't scouting Marty at the time," Penner said. "I was just trying to get to the front of the net, and whenever a right or left shot is wheeling around the top of the circle, and shoots across the grain, it's got a pretty good chance of going in if there is traffic in front."

It was Carter's fifth of the postseason and it gave the Kings another big advantage in a series. The eighth-seeded Kings opened 3-0 leads in each of the first three rounds in the Western Conference.

That could come on Monday, when Game 3 is held in Los Angeles.

"Playoff hockey, you put it on the net as much as you can," Carter said. "It's usually a cheesy goal. But Penns did a great job of getting right in front of Marty there. To be honest, I don't even know if he saw around Penns, or if he saw the shot."

When it was over, the Kings all gathered around Carter just off the Brodeur's left in the faceoff circle. For the second time in as many games, Brodeur looked up to the sky, picked himself up, and skated off an overtime loser at home. He said he had trouble seeing the final shot.

The Devils' best OT chance came when Quick stopped a blast by Ilya Kovalchuk in the opening minutes. The Russian nearly won the game in the closing seconds of regulation after a turnover set him up in the right circle, but his shot banged off the crossbar after Kings center Anze Kopitar hurried the attempt.

Parise also had a jam shot on the edge of the crease with 4:08 to play and a shot from the left circle that Quick smothered with 90 seconds to go in regulation.

Brodeur also came up big in the third period. He stopped Kopitar, who had the overtime score in Game 1, in close with 10:30 left in the period, and Dwight King from the right circle less than a minute later.

Quick seemed headed for his third shutout of the postseason when the Devils suddenly found a way to beat him early in the third period, just seconds after a Kings flurry in the Devils' end. Of course, it was the fourth line that stepped up after contributing so much in the series win over the Rangers.

Steve Bernier kept the puck alive in the right corner, and passed to Marek Zidlicky on the point. Zidlicky's slap shot was tipped by an unguarded Ryan Carter in the slot and it went into the corner of the net behind Quick, who was screened by Stephen Gionta.

Until then, it seemed as if Doughty's spectacular goal was going to be the game winner. The defenseman picked up the puck between the circles, skated past David Clarkson at the Kings' blue line and sped through the neutral zone. He avoided a stick check by Carter entering the Devils' zone and fired a shot between defenseman Bryce Salvador's legs that beat Brodeur to the corner of the net.

Doughty let out a scream as the puck went in and then skated back to his bench to accept congratulations for his third goal of the postseason.

The Devils had the better of the play in the first period, thanks in part to better forechecking and two power plays. But Doughty's end-to-end rush and Quick's goaltending had Los Angeles ahead 1-0.

Quick's best saves came on a tip in front by Dainius Zubrus with just under eight minutes left in the period and a follow-up rebound by Parise.

The goaltender also seemed to make a skate save on a blast from the left circle by Kovalchuk on a power play, but the Russian was not given a shot in the box score.

Playing in his 200th postseason game, Brodeur faced six shots in the opening period but several were quality chances. The 40-year-old stoned Mike Richards on his doorstep with 6:45 left in the period and got him again late in the second after Penner set up the former Flyer in the left circle.

Brodeur also had snapping glove saves on Justin Williams and Colin Fraser in keep the Devils in the game.

NOTES: Brodeur is the 20th NHL player to appear in 200 postseason games and just the second goaltender. Patrick Roy played in 247 contests. ... The Kings have scored first in six of their 10 road games in the postseason. ... Kings D Willie Mitchell hit Clarkson in the face with his stick after fanning on a shot. Clarkson was stunned, but didn't seem to bleed. ...This was the 49th one-goal game of the playoffs, two shy of the NHL record set in 2007.

Japan, Iran win in World Cup qualifying

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:19 p.m. ET June 3, 2012

UNDATED (AP) - Ryoichi Maeda and Shinji Okazaki scored second-half goals on Sunday as Japan started its final round of 2014 World Cup qualifiers with a 3-0 win over Oman.

Iran stunned Uzbekistan 1-0 with a goal in the final seconds of stoppage time. Jordan held Iraq to a 1-1 draw.

Maeda gave Japan a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute of the Group B match at Saitama when he took a pass from Shinji Kagawa, broke to his left and slid the ball under the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

Okazaki put the result beyond doubt just three minutes later, gathering his own rebound and beating Al Habsi from close range.

The top two teams in both of the five-team qualifying groups will secure an automatic spot at Brazil. The third place teams advance to a playoff.

In Tashkent, Mohammad Reza Khalatbari scored in stoppage time to give Iran the win at Uzbekistan. Substitute Karim Ansarifard broke down the right wing before passing to Khalatbari, who found the net in the fourth minute of added time.

Iran was lucky to win the Group A match, given Uzbekistan had the better chances for most of the match and looked to have scored in the 74th minute.

Uzbekistan captain Odil Ahmedov knocked the ball into the net, but Iran defender Jalal Hosseini, who was inside the goal mouth, managed to clear it away. TV replays showed the ball had clearly crossed the line, but the referees did not award a goal and play continued.

In the other Group B match, Iraq midfielder Nashat Akram opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a solo effort from outside the penalty area. Jordan striker Ahmad Hayel Ibrahim took advantage of some poor goalkeeping to level in the 43rd minute.

The result at Amman was a setback for Iraq, which is aiming to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. With Brazilian Zico at the helm, Iraq had impressed recently with five wins despite being required to play two of its home matches on neutral turf.
