John Shore: They're Here, They're Queer, They've Plenty to Fear: LGBT Students Form Secret Club at Conservative Christian University

If you imagine American Christianity as a 1950s city in the Midwest, Biola University would be its Central High. Gigantic (145 academic programs; 95 acres; more than 1 million square feet of building space in 40 major buildings) and long-established (founded in 1908), Biola is one of the big dogs of Christian colleges. And as big dogs go, it is definitely one of the more conservative ones. On the Biola website, under "Our Vision," it says, "Biola University's vision is to be an exemplary Christian university, characterized as a community of grace that promotes and inspires personal life transformation in Christ which illuminates the world with His light and truth." Located in Los Angeles, Biola is, in short, the sort of place where, back in the day, the Church Lady would have been head cheerleader.

So you can imagine my surprise when, while working in a Starbucks on the afternoon of May 9, I received this email:

Hi John!

I'm a student at Biola University, which is one of the country's most prestigious evangelical universities, and arguably one of the most close-minded when it comes to LGBTQ issues. I am a huge fan of your work.

At Biola, if a student is openly in a same-sex relationship, they're almost certain to be expelled -- and God only knows how the school would handle those who are transgender.

I am the co-founder of Biola's secret LGBTQ-Straight Alliance. And we just staged a mini-uprising at Biola to announce our new website, Biola Queer Underground.

This morning we had a group of students from other universities come on to our campus and pass out business cards with our website information on it. We also had our friends put up posters that read Biola Is Queer, and we placed QR codes for our website on popsicle sticks which were then placed all over campus.

My favorite part was a sign we made that had a picture of Ellen and Portia, and Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, with a Biola, Why U No Like?? meme underneath.

Anyway, we would really appreciate anything you might do by way of letting the world know we're out here (ha, ha). Of course, none of my personal information could be disclosed; I'm trying to remain anonymous as possible, since we're all facing possible expulsion by doing this.

What?! A group of gay underground student activists -- at Biola?! That's like being a snickerdoodle in the inside pocket of Cookie Monster's sports coat!

I asked my new underground gay activist student friend if I could call him/her/[I'll never tell]. After receiving the number to call, I immediately stepped outside: the walls, after all, have ears (plus, they block signal reception).

"So you're really forming this club?" I asked the person on the other end of the phone. "At Biola?"

"That's what we're doing," came the voice of a kind and intelligent young adult. "We have to. This whole school is so oppressive. What we're doing is so needed here."

"This is beyond amazing. Aren't you afraid you're going to get caught? And expelled?"

"Oh, we'll definitely get expelled if the school finds out we're doing this. That's for sure. I'll send you an article from our campus newspaper in which Chris Grace, Biola's vice president of Student Development and university planning, is quoted as saying that any student who 'explicitly challenging or violating' the school's policies on homosexuality will be expelled." The student did send me that article; Mr. Grace did say exactly that.

"Do your parents know you're doing this?"

"Not at all. Definitely not." The extra emphasis made sense. It costs some $40,000 a year to attend Biola. I can't imagine too many of the students' parents being thrilled at their child being expelled from the school for being unrepentantly gay.

"How did you even start this club?" I asked.

"Well, I'm [gay/lesbian/transgender/guess you'll have to guess, Mr. Grace] and knew a few other students who were the same. So one day I was talking with a friend, and we came to realize how badly a club like Queer Underground was needed at Biola. So we decided to start that club ourselves. We held our first meeting this past winter. From there the club grew very quickly, and we've been holding weekly meetings ever since."

"How did you find people to join Biola Queer Underground?" I asked. I imagined her/him standing in the shadows of the student union building, wearing dark glasses, a fedora, and a belted trench coat with the collar turned up, whispering to students passing by, "Pssst. Gay? Wanna be in a club?"

"Telling people that we exist is definitely the tricky part. We have to be so careful. But the truth is, once we started the club, I could just... we could... I mean, not to sound all charismatic about it, but we could just feel when we were dealing with a student who would benefit from it. But even then, we're very careful. We have this whole system set up, where we essentially, and very delicately, vet a person through talking to and connecting with their friends and associates. It's a subtle process. But it works. By the time we actually extend someone an invitation to join us, we know that's the right thing to do. And so far it's been great. It's surprised even us how many people have joined the group."

"And no leaks so far?"

"No leaks so far. But after the event we did this morning, we're all feeling the pressure. The whole security and safety thing at Biola has always been really pronounced: There are always security guards all over campus. Which is great. But that whole apparatus really kicked into gear after we had spread our stuff all over campus this morning. Within 10 minutes, everything we put out had disappeared. All of it, gone. Now everyone in security is looking for us."

"That's pretty scary."

"It is. But we blend. If there's one thing gay Christians know how to do, it's blend."

"What would you like for me to tell people?" I asked.

"Just tell them we're here. That's all we want, is for people to know that we exist. Even though our group is large, we can't help but feel awfully isolated, having to be so secretive, always knowing that at any moment our whole world might be turned upside down and shaken hard, just because of who we are. So it would be a huge comfort for us to know that out there in the world people know of us, and support us in what we're doing. From deep underground we are calling for love and acceptance. It'd be nice to know that our voice broke through the surface, and that someone out there actually heard us."

Iran is offered new plans to ease nuclear concerns

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iran traded proposals with six world powers, including the United States, Wednesday in a new round of talks aimed at persuading Tehran to curb its nuclear program and ease concerns it wants to make atomic weapons. But divisions over sanctions complicated the discussions.

The Baghdad talks could offer a test of how much the U.S. and its allies are willing to bend on demands for Iran to halt all uranium enrichment and instead concentrate on just stopping the highest-grade production.

No breakthrough accords were expected in the Iraqi capital, suggesting that all sides are still shaping their strategies and the negotiation process is likely to be long and complex. That could allow U.S. and European allies to significantly tone down threats of military action. But it would likely bring objections from Israel, which claims that Iran is only trying to buy time to keep its nuclear fuel labs in full operation.

The meetings opened with the so-called 5+1 group ? the permanent U.N. Security Council members, the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France, plus Germany ? putting forward a proposal apparently aimed at reining in Iran's highest-level uranium enrichment. Many world leaders fear the uranium, enriched to 20 percent, could be quickly turned into warhead-grade material. Other details of the plan were not immediately disclosed.

"We hope the package that we put on the table is attractive to them so they will react positively," Mike Mann, spokesman for the head of the European Union delegation that is leading the talks, told reporters. "It's up to them to react."

Hours later, Iran made its move by offering a counterproposal that includes what one member of its negotiating team called "nuclear and non-nuclear issues." The official would not discuss details of the plan, but said it would be discussed in private meetings with diplomats from the European Union and China, an Iranian ally.

The Iranian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks, predicted negotiations would continue Thursday.

Earlier, Iranian envoys set their goal for the Baghdad talks: Seeking agreements to lessen, or at least delay, sanctions that have targeted Iran's critical oil exports and cut off the country from lucrative European markets.

Mann would not discuss whether the 20 percent level enrichment represented a red line that could again scuttle the negotiations, which had only restarted last month after collapsing in early 2011.

The high-enriched uranium is far above the level needed for energy-producing reactors, but is used in medical research. Iran claims its nuclear program is only for electricity and medical applications.

Tehran has tentatively agreed to allow U.N. inspectors to restart probes into a military base with suspected links to nuclear arms-related tests. Mann expressed cautious optimism about the still-unsigned deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency, but said it would have little bearing on Wednesday's talks.

Mann also suggested that any rollback in sanctions was unlikely in the Baghdad talks. He said some of the most painful sanctions ? including a European Union ban on Iranian oil imports beginning July 1 ? are a "matter of the law and they will come into force when they come into force."

The Obama administration has been vague about its immediate goals, with officials saying the talks will gauge Iran's seriousness and explore elements of a possible agreement. A Western diplomat in Baghdad said the talks will focus on "confidence-building measures" that Iran's nuclear program is only being used for peaceful purposes.

Washington has shown little willingness to bargain, despite the tentative IAEA agreement to inspect the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran. That's where the U.N. believes Iran ran explosive tests in 2003 needed to set off a nuclear charge. Tehran says Parchin is not a nuclear site.

In an op-ed piece in Wednesday's editions of the Wall Street Journal, Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, and Independent Joe Lieberman, urged taking a hard line against Iran and "to leave no doubt that the window for diplomacy is closing."

"The Iranian regime's long record of deceit and defiance should make us extremely cautious about its willingness to engage in good-faith diplomacy," the senators wrote. "The U.S. must be prepared, if necessary, to use military force to stop Iran from getting a nuclear-weapons capability."

Iran's top officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have repeatedly said that Iran does not seek nuclear arms and have called such weapons against Islamic principles.

During a visit to western Iran on Wednesday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad evoked Khamenei's belief that "production and use of weapons of mass destruction is forbidden" by Islam.

"There is no room for these weapons in Iran's defense doctrine," he said at a gathering to commemorate victims of Iraqi chemical weapons during the 1980-88 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Iran is sticking to its right to enrich uranium as a signatory of U.N. nuclear treaties. The West and others fear the level of enrichment Iran is doing can be turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium.

At the heart of the debate are sanctions the West has placed on Iran to force it to the bargaining table ? particularly on an EU decision to cut all crude oil imports from Iran that are set to take effect July 1. The 27-nation EU accounts for just 18 percent of Iran's total oil exports.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate backed proposals for further sanctions on Iran, including requiring companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges to disclose any Iran-related business. U.S. and European measures already have targeted Iran's oil exports ? its chief revenue source ? and effectively blocked the country from international banking networks.

Oil fell to a seven-month low near $91 a barrel Wednesday on hopes of progress in the talks.

Commonly used pesticide turns honey bees into 'Picky eaters'

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Biologists at UC San Diego have discovered that a small dose of a commonly used crop pesticide turns honey bees into "picky eaters" and affects their ability to recruit their nestmates to otherwise good sources of food.

The results of their experiments, detailed in this week's issue of the Journal of Experimental Biology, have implications for what pesticides should be applied to bee-pollinated crops and shed light on one of the main culprits suspected to be behind the recent declines in honey bee colonies.

Since 2006, beekeepers in North America and Europe have lost about one-third of their managed bee colonies each year due to "colony collapse disorder." While the exact cause is unknown, researchers believe pesticides have contributed to this decline. One group of crop pesticides, called "neonicotinoids," has received particular attention from beekeepers and researchers.

The UC San Diego biologists focused their study on a specific neonicotinoid known as "imidacloprid," which has been banned for use in certain crops in some European countries and is being increasingly scrutinized in the United States.

"In 2006, it was the sixth most commonly used pesticide in California and is sold for agricultural and home garden use," said James Nieh, a professor of biology at UC San Diego who headed the research project with graduate student Daren Eiri, the first author of the study. "It is known to affect bee learning and memory."

The two biologists found in their experiments that honey bees treated with a small, single dose of imidacloprid, comparable to what they would receive in nectar, became "picky eaters."

"In other words, the bees preferred to only feed on sweeter nectar and refused nectars of lower sweetness that they would normally feed on and that would have provided important sustenance for the colony," said Eiri. "In addition, bees typically recruit their nestmates to good food with waggle dances, and we discovered that the treated bees also danced less."

The two researchers point out that honey bees that prefer only very sweet foods can dramatically reduce the amount of resources brought back to the colony. Further reductions in their food stores can occur when bees no longer communicate to their kin the location of the food source.

"Exposure to amounts of pesticide formerly considered safe may negatively affect the health of honey bee colonies," said Nieh.

To test how the preference of sugary sources changed due to imidacloprid, the scientists individually harnessed the bees so only their heads could move. By stimulating the bees' antennae with sugar water, the researchers were able to determine at what concentrations the sugar water was rewarding enough to feed on. Using an ascending range of sugar water from 0 to 50 percent, the researchers touched the antennae of each bee to see if it extended its mouthparts. Bees that were treated with imidacloprid were less willing to feed on low concentrations of sugar water than those that were not treated.

The biologists also observed how the pesticide affected the bees' communication system. Bees communicate to each other the location of a food source by performing waggle dances. The number of waggle dances performed indicates the attractiveness of the reward and corresponds to the number of nestmates recruited to good food.

"Remarkably, bees that fed on the pesticide reduced the number of their waggle dances between fourfold and tenfold," said Eiri. "And in some cases, the affected bees stopped dancing completely."

The two scientists said their discoveries not only have implications for how pesticides are applied and used in bee-pollinated crops, but provide an additional chemical tool that can be used by other researchers studying the neural control of honey bee behavior.

The study was funded by the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign and the National Science Foundation.

Let's be clear: home improvement loans aren't for everyone. If you're looking to remodel a kitchen, then it may be the best option for financing the work. But if you're planting a few trees and painting a home office, then you'll probably want to avoid the work of a renovation loan. But how do you know if financing is the way to go? Let's take a look at how to decide if home improvement loans are right for you and your remodeling needs.

This financing option allows the home buyer or homeowner to roll the cost of repairs - minor or major - into the mortgage on the house. This means you're paying the same interest rate as your house payment instead of a credit card or store credit rate. It also means the cost of the upgrading is amortized over the life of the loan. This makes expensive home improvements much more affordable in monthly payments that add value to the home price.

All of this is great if you're planning to remodel the kitchen or add a bathroom or replace old windows. But what if you're just re-painting a room? Many small projects you can do yourself or hire a professional for a weekend. In this case, refinancing your house into a home improvement loan is a bit much. Maybe you can get an unsecured loan from your credit union or bank, or better yet you may have the cash in savings. That's a better way to go.

When your list of upgrades begins to get as long as your arm, then it's time to consider a bit more help than a savings account or holding a garage sale to come up with the money. Home improvement loans can help finance projects like kitchen remodeling (including new appliances), carpet replacement or other flooring, an entire house re-painting, roof repair, basement waterproofing & finishing...the list goes on and on.

If you don't mind the paperwork it takes to refinance your house, and you have 3.5% of the entire budget as a down payment then financing the projects with a loan like the FHA 203k is a possible solution. If you're buying the house then doing so with the 203k isn't that much different than a standard FHA loan. Either way, rolling the cost of making the house your dream home is possible with home improvement financing. If you'd rather do the work yourself and put in "sweat equity," then you'll want to go with a standard mortgage loan or avoid refinancing your house. That's the simple answer to the FHA 203k vs DIY question.

A community mortgage lender should be interested in keeping you in a mortgage you can afford and that makes sense for your house. Don't let someone talk you into more house than you can afford, or financing you don't really need. A renovation loan is one option out there, but it's not for everyone.
